Text Editting and Layer Control problems.

Anonymous

Firstly, I'm not certain that this is a AutoCAD problem or an operating system issue, but I figured this would be my first and best option for a solution.

I'm using AutoCAD 2016.

In Paper space I cannot edit Text in either plain text or in a table, I can click on the Text but the dialogue box does not pop up to enable editing, If I'm trying to fill text into a table I can click on the cell and the cell highlights to modify the cell but once again I cannot get the dialogue box to appear.

I always use one layer per component. I'm used to being able to change the layer a component is on by using the Drop down layer control. If I try this now, all that happens is that I change the current layer. I can still change the layer a component is on by using the Properties Control but this is slow to use.

The above started to occur yesterday, mid way through the working day. It was fine in the morning but became problematic as the day wore on.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

whenever a drawing makes difficulties it's always a good rule to run a check ... so start command _AUDIT and see if there are database-internal errors found.

What comes to my mind when you can't edit objects: are the layers locked on which these objects are set?

When you do copy & paste of such an object into another drawing, can you then edit the text or the cell-content?

If you can upload the drawing (and mark which objects you can't edit) then we can take a look into it.

Hi Alfred,

Thanks for your input.

  • I've checked all the layers are unlocked....they are.
  • I ran the Audit, it didn't find anything to fix.
  • I pasted the Table in the above drawing into a new file, I still could not edit or add Text into the Table.
  • In the above drawing, I cannot edit or add any further Text to the "Design Data" Table, also I cannot edit the Text in the frame or the dimensions.

Any other ideas?

Hi,

>> In the above drawing, I cannot edit or add any further Text to the "Design Data" Table,

If the design data table is a result of a function in your (maybe Mechanical) AutoCAD, then it's specific to the application or vertical product you are running.

If it's a table you created manually using the _TABLE command, then please upload the DWG, not a screenshot (a screenshot does not allow us to select an object and look into it's details).

Hi Alfred

I've attached the drawing as a file.

The Table was created using the Table commend.

Hi,

I don't see any problem editing the table.

Which version of AutoCAD and service pack are you using? (on which operating system)

Well that's something!

I'm working on Windows 10,

I don't know the Maintenance service pack number but I believe that I'm up to date.

My AutoCAD in ripped out of Mechanical desktop.

Hi,

>> I don't know the Maintenance service pack number but I believe that I'm up to date.

Start command _ABOUT and compare it with that result of service packs for AutoCAD >>>click<<<

To check if it's the AutoCAD profile ... create a new Windows user, login with that account, start AutoCAD and try the same with a new drawing and with that specific drawing. Can you now edit text objects and/or table-cells?

I suspect PICKFIRST getting set back to one will solve your layer pulldown problem as well. Check it now, also ensure PICKADD variable is on too.

PICKADD set to 1 sorted the Layer issue.

Thanks for all your help guys.

The only question that remains is; why did these values change in the first place? I've been using AutoCAD for the last 25 years and have never encountered this issue before. Must be the "Wonders of modern technology".

Once again, many thanks for your help.
