Sub Object History Selection (AutoCad 2016)

When we go to select the sub-object history of a solid, either by using the selection sub-object filters or using the ctrl+right click most of the time it won’t let us select what we want even when we cycle through the various sub-objects, unless we change our view to the 2D Wireframe, and even then it is hit-or-miss at times.  Usually we are trying to select holes (cylinders subtracted from a box) or the face of a box that already has other subtractions (so we can apply a visual material on top of a “core” material).  We think that it may have to do with the way the sub-objects are being highlighted with sort of a solid-fill.  We turned our PRESELECTIONEFFECT to 0 (Dashed and thickened lines (legacy behavior)), and SELECTIONEFFECT to 0 (Dashed lines) but the sub-objects still get that highlighted solid-fill thing going on, we can’t seem to turn that off!  The question is, how do we turn that off or “fix” our sub-object selection so it is back to a 2014 (or earlier) type selection (where it only has the thickened and highlighted lines)?

Hi @Anonymous,

Thank you for posting today!

There is another system variable you can adjust: try switching HIGHLIGHT from 1 to 0.

Additionally, are you running AutoCAD on a system with a certified graphics card and driver? (You can check here.)

We set our Highlight (System Variable) to 0 as suggested and did some checking, it still won’t select all of the sub-objects that we are trying to select, unless we switch over to 2D Wireframe.  It all started with the 2015 version, it worked fine in 2014.  We have a mish-mash of computers and graphics cards. Most have NVIDIA K600, one has a NVIDIA Quattro 4000, another has a NVIDIA K2000, and one has a AMD FirePro 3900 (which on our graphicsconfig says it’s using “Intel(R) HD Graphics“ for some reason!)  All but the AMD FirePro 3900 computer is offline (the other computers inmates are using to learn AutoCAD and they CAN’T be online).  We tried to find the certified hardware page numerous times, but it won’t display the page?

Hi @Anonymous,

It sounds like the machine with the AMD FirePro 3900 has dual graphics cards (the Intel integrated card in addition to the performance AMD card). There is a known issue with these setups, where AutoCAD ends up using the Intel card instead of the AMD card.

Please take a look at this article and follow the instructions to force AutoCAD to use the AMD performance card. Then test the program and let me know if the sub-object selection works any better for you.
