Project based ACAD template

Hi All

Background

I want to use ACAD so that I have 1 x DWG for plans, section elevations.  Plus another DWG file the sheets.  but within the Sheets file, I will only have 1 x model space and 1 x layout.

The setup

I have a master ACAD DWT file that is located on a central server i.e. Z drive  A user profile points to this DWT file.  Within the DWT i have setup the CAD Standards etc.

This DWT hosts 1 x model space and 1 x empty layout, any new DWG will match the DWT

What I am trying to work out is.

I want to have a 2nd DWT located in the project folder, which will host the various titleblocks.  Thus, when a new project starts, I edit this project DWT and its titleblocks to suit the project.

The workflow would be.  create a new DWG using the central DWT, then use the 'add layout from template' and select the sheet ie A1L from the project folder DWT.

I was thinking of having an ACAD use profile per Project, but a user will not swap profiles.

I want to know how I can make ACAD point to the Project DWT for the sheets/titleblocks.?

The Design Center (CTRL+2 from the alpha keyboard) can be smart to import almost anything from favorites... so it does to any open dwg or dwt

Hi Tramber

Can I add a link to a template in this?

You can have multiple template paths by creating shortcuts to each of the project template folder location and save these shortcuts in the default Autocad template folder location (Or inside a subfolder)

The shortcuts should be directed to each of the project folder where you have your project template saved.

Here is an example of a Project Templates folder located under the default AutoCAD Template folder location

Note Shortcuts like 2026 VP Line Type when selected will go directly to the project template folder located under H: drive

I have setup the main template to be defined by the options as per your image.  But i am trying to work out the best way to have a project based template as well.

  • Main template has all the CAD standards
  • Project template has the title blocks

Unfortunately you can only select a Template (dwt) to apply to a dwg when you execute the NEW command.

This is how they show up when creating shorcuts:

Morning Paul

Thank you for the replies.  So basically, you can only have 1 template defined.  Then use shortcuts to point to project specific templates.  Although this is not ideal, due to the huge number of projects, it is a work around.

Thank you
