And the problem is ....?

Please recognize that we are not sitting besides of you, we have not seen what you do, what AutoCAD then did and what you see. Without that information's we can't support you.

Hi, These are the steps I always do: 1. Open the drawing where I want to insert PDF 2. Go to Insert menu -->> Reference -->> Attach 3. Browse to file to find a pdf and click open 4. A window "Attach PDF Underlay" is open 5. Choose settings and click OK 6. click insertion point in the drawing 7. Adjust scale factor 8. Finish Hopefully above information help.

I go through the step up to "insert" ; when I click on 'insert' i get message " missing or invalid reference"   I selected the pdf in the file where it resides, so I don't understand how it is either missing or invalid  (?!)

Hi,

I don't understand: You want to ATTACH a pdf, and you say you select the pdf what is already present?

That doesn't make sense, so I guess you try to IMPORT a pdf, what means you want to convert the pdf content to autocad object (what is attached to th file already), right?

This means you want to convert the pdf content to autocad objects.

Tell us in detail what you have now and whats your goal.

Screenshots welcome too (or dwg and pdf files).
