I am a practicing architect from Hyderabad, India, and I would like to share an idea inspired by working on large architectural and multidisciplinary projects.
AutoCAD already provides a vast coordinate-based workspace. What if this virtually unlimited space could be intelligently divided into dedicated working zones within a single DWG, allowing multiple users to work simultaneously?
For example, in a large residential project, one user could work on Tower A, another on Tower B, while structural, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, fire, and interiors teams work in their respective zones. All users could remain within the same DWG environment while working in their assigned areas.
Each zone could also have role-based privacy and access control, so only authorized users can view or edit specific areas. This would allow teams to coordinate when required while keeping unrelated work private.
Today, large projects often depend on multiple DWG files and Xrefs. Although Xrefs are very useful, managing many referenced files can create coordination challenges such as file dependencies, path issues, version mismatches, reloading, and maintaining consistency.
The idea is to use AutoCAD's existing workspace as the basis for a more intelligent shared environment. The workspace could expand as the project grows, with new zones and users added without creating multiple disconnected working files.
This could transform the DWG from simply a drawing file into an intelligent, expandable project workspace.
One DWG. Unlimited space. Multiple teams. Intelligent access.
I believe this could open a new direction for how large architectural and multidisciplinary teams work in AutoCAD.
I would be very interested in contributing further ideas from an architect's practical perspective if the AutoCAD team sees potential in exploring this concept.
