objects don't display in 2018

I have a dwg that was created by a third party software. once i open it i cannot see objects that i draw like a line or pline. I can see circles though. This seems very odd and wanted to kow if anyone has come across this and what the work around is.

Set COLOR command to 7 (or 1). Now draw a line, see it?

didn't work. Actually soime odd stuff is going on with this dwg. I wound up hitting plan twice and all of a sudden i can see all objects I've drawn...
