nested, attached xrefs do not appear

I have a strange, random problem where an xref does not load or show its attached child xrefs.  I can attach the parent xref or overlay it, but the attached child xrefs don't even appear in the reference listing.  I have triple-checked to make sure the child xrefs are "attached", and they are, but they don't appear.  If I open the parent xref, there are the children, so they should show up if I reference the parent into another drawing, but no.

Has anyone run into this problem?

Is there a pathing problem perhaps, or their layers are off, or there content is annotative and you don't have the correct CANNOSCALE set in the very top file.

Will a nested xref not appear if only a little bit of the content is annotative and CANNOSCALE is not correct?  Otherwise, pathing is correct, all layers thawed and on.  The children xrefs don't even appear in the external reference dialog box, even though they are attached (not overlays).

Without access to the files I can only assume you have the wrong XREF (childless) in the topmost file otherwise.
