my cad blocks are showing up as simple boxes?

Only in one drawing? If so can you show that drawing?
Also might be important: which version of AutoCAD and service pack are you using.
On every issue with display it's always worth to try to disable hardware acceleration (command _GRAPHICSCONFIG).
