I used "save as" to create a new drawing from an existing file that I did not have any problems with. For some reason, the mtext that already existed shows up in my viewports as well as new leader text, but any new mtext that I've added does not. The viewports were also already existing from the previous file. I have not changed any settings either!
All of the layers are on, and I've tried deleting and re-adding the viewports with no luck. All of the text settings are the same as the original file, and like I mentioned before I did not have any problems with the previous file.
Please help this is driving me bonkers!

Hi, the first thing I would check is that the ANNOALLVISBLE system variable is set to 1

the ANNOALLVISBLE command worked! I wonder what would've caused that to change from just using the "save as" command?
Thanks so much!

I've also had this problem, but the solution above didn't make any difference. What did make a difference was that I changed the font in the text style using the same windows in the message above. The text would not show up in model space or paper space, (I knew it was there as I could see it when I moused over it) until I changed the font in the text style to romans.shx. I think any .shx font would yield the same result.
The text style was a custom text style from an architect that had Arial Narrow as the font.
As to why the Arial Narrow font would not display is a mystery. Maybe someone with more in depth knowledge can shed more light on this.

I'm having this same issue. My text in version 2015 appears just fine. When I open the same drawing in 2020, the Mtext disappears. You can see the markers if you select the area but no text appears. I played with different texts as @Anonymous_01 suggested and I was able to get most of my regular fonts to show up but not a couple of True Type fonts. That kind of worked but still am having issues. I'm going back to 2015 version where everything works and shows up like it's supposed to. Don't have time for this!

Are you talking about (M)Text in the same file or just about (M)Texts which are part of external references in this file?
(If you like to get help, use etransmit to zip all needed external files too (conversion setup, select all 'include options')

It's mtext in the same file, not an xref. As I mentioned the text shows up fine in version 2015 but not in version 2020. Today when I opened the drawing the fonts show up. Ghosts in the machine?👻
