Jumpy Cursor even with snap and grid turned off ?

Hi all,

My PC recently got upgraded to following:

HP Z2 workstation running windows 10 with

i5-8600 cpu @3.10GHz

32.0 GB RAM

Nvidia Quadro P2200 graphics

I am experiencing Jumpy and erratic behavior of cursor when I have couple of xrefs in drawings. This mainly happens when I have a base map inserted as an xref and even with all the snaps and grids turned off. I have started to wonder if this processor is not good enough for the tasks i am doing? Any pointers will be much appreciated, specially if someone is running i5-8600 cpu on there workstation.

Hi,

Q: Does this happened in every CAD dwg or just in a certain CAD file ?

just a try ... set your SELECTIONPREVIEW (System Variable) = 0 .

Yes. Once I bring in the vector base map it starts acting up. Selectioncyling is turned off already as I never liked it anyway.

Hi,

Can you check if "3DCONFIG" is turned on?

Yes. I have double checked this already and turning it off doesn't make huge difference as well

Ok bit more detail on it. So it is only happening when I bring in the xref to the drawing. If I open the same xref on its own then the issue is not there. So it seems like it might be a settings related to xrefs ?

Here it is. Base map inserted into a new drawing. Open the base map no problem and open the drawing with xref base map = Jumpy cursor. This is driving me mad at the moment.

Post a screenshot of your ABOUT command.
AND
Post a screenshot of your GRAPHICSCONFIG command.

Also try turning off LINESMOOTHING nd LINEFADING variables.

Apologies I wasn't thinking straight. Please see the attached screen grab. Unfortunately because of copyright issues I cannot provide you with base map. Sorry

C3D? You probably have to remove the last update you installed, see the dedicated C3D forum for similar issues to confirm, here is the link https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/civil-3d-forum/bd-p/66

Want me to ask the site admin to move your post there?

just a try ... while you open your CAD dwg with attached base map

  • type  RIBBONCLOSE .
  • close your Properties dialog .

then see if any changes ?

Sure, please move the post to appropriate location. I will try to uninstall the last update and report back. Sorry I was not sure where to post this as I only use Civil 3D as AutoCAD as I don't have AutoCAD on its own. Thanks for your help.

More than likely, it is probably something about the XREF that is causing this. I've seen a single orphaned attribute in an XREF bring files down to a snail's pace.

How come the actual xref when opened on its own works fine?

Plus I have purged, Audited and copy pasted my xref into new drawing to be sure that nothing is messing about or left behind. Been using CAD for over 20 years and have never come across this before. I have started to believe my CPU is not good enough for the tasks I am throwing at it. Just a thought as I have tried everything.

Sorry just tried and it makes no difference. FYI - Cursor will only start acting up when start a draw line command.

Sometimes these things don't become an issue until the file is XREF'd.

There are a number of things that can cause this kind of behavior. Have you tried this on another computer with a similar software setup and operating system?
