Jerky Cursor in AutoCAD 2018

Anonymous
Not applicable

I've just started AutoCAD 2018 version.

I have everything working fine EXCEPT for a jerky cursor.

It works smoothly until a command is started.

Then, it takes a full second before it moves and then it jerks, almost as if a snap was set.

I've check past postings and have adjusted as suggested, but, to no avail.

I'm ready to start over and follow any suggestions you all out there might have.

I have the same issue with 2018. Drawing works fine for a certain amount of time then when I enter a command to move or copy (as two examples), my crosshairs start jumping and usually jump past what I want to select and I have to slow down and move slowly to get them to pick the object. I have purged my drawings, ran an audit, and then wblocked the entire drawing and then opened a new drawing and inserted everything. That is the only way I can remedy the problem at this time.

ok, selection cycling off (- anything) is not a solution. It may help, but obviously adesk did not pay attention to minimizing cursor monitor activity when all the whistles and bells are off.

I'm getting tired of responses from adesk claiming its our files.

Don't you get it that its your job to make the program work with real files.

Also, your team seems to be uneducated as to the effects of app ids and "dirt".

Most have NO effect on these bugs. In fact, I have yet to see a single problem caused by them.

Its just too easy to clean stuff so we pre-test on those issues before going to support but we do want support to see the real original files that are not perfect. But remember, there is ONLY ONE autocad so where did the dirt come from mr autodesk who wont fix the dwg format for dirt transmission like app ids?

Either fix the problems or deal with them, but I suspect your support team is overbooked?

Thanks. I typically get this problem when I get specific drawings from some other firm. I clicked on the link in this article that deals with specific drawing issues and it said the page has been removed or no longer available.

FYI, I just found this thread after search Google for "Civil3d 2018 jerky mouse."

My symptoms:  mouse tracks smoothly across the display when moving the mouse quickly, or at a medium speed.  When the mouse is within the drawing area, and I try to move the mouse slowly or with fine control to select an object, the mouse becomes jerky.

Discovered fix:  turn graphics hardware acceleration off!  I find that very odd.

Rant:  why pay the $$ for an engineering workstation with the graphics giddyup for high power 3d modeling and have it be worthless in Civil3D?  (Answer:  I also run solid modeling software and CFD software, so I want my 3d hardware acceleration.)  WHY can't Civil3D work correctly with hardware graphics acceration turned on?  /rant=off

I do recall recently installing "the latest" Nvidia quadro graphics driver, so it is possible this fault or jerky behavior lies with the Nvidia driver.  If I can figure out how to roll back the driver without blowing up my system, I just may do that.  If driver rollback fixes this issue, I'll try to remember to report back.

System details:

Dell Mobile Precision m5510 with the 2.8Ghz Xeon mobile processor, Nvidia m1000 graphics

32GB RAM, SSD's all around.

Windows 7 Pro x64 (required for some other, older software (SolidWorks 2013) I have installed.)

Windows Updates are pretty up-to-date (maybe a few outstanding updates).

Here is my graphics config:

I had my IT guy update my graphics card and all works fine in drawings that I create no matter the size, EXCEPT when I open a drawing(s) that I received from an outsource. Even after I purge and audit, the problem still exists.

An update:  After rebooting (Windows:  when in doubt, reboot!  🙂  ), I manually set "AudoDesk AutoCad application" to use "high performance NVIDIA processor":

  1. right click on empty screen desktop (display) background, select NVIDIA Control Panel
  2. click on "Manage 3D Settings" on left side of window
  3. In "Manage 3D Settings" tab, select the Program Settings tab, then
  4. under Select a Program to Customize, select Autodesk AutoCAD program (Autodesk ... in the dropdown menu, then
  5. set Select the preferred graphics processor for this program:  to High-performance NVIDIA processor

NVIDIA control panel.PNG

Started Civil3D 2018, opened drawing that was having issues.  (NOTE:  I had two unresolved external references -- bitmap files I was using for my company logo in two separate paperspaces.  I changed the paths to point to the correct location.  I don't know if these unresolved external references could have been causing C3D heartburn or not;  would seem doubtful as a graphics issue, but who knows.)  Now the mouse was moving smoothly, even when I moved very slowly within pixels of alignments and polylines, where before it was jerky.

Possible fixes:  reboot (ha!);  changed graphics application via NVIDIA control panel to ALWAYS use NVIDIA processor.

Possible issues:  My m5510 has a second internal hard disk;  as such, it has the smaller battery (56Whr).  If I find the battery running low much quicker than normal, I may have to consider switching AutoCAD application back to "auto" and then turn GRAPHICSCONFIG to OFF when I'm running on battery (e.g. in the field.)

Hope this helps someone.

I take it all back.  The jerkiness returned.  If I turn GRAPHICSCONFIG off (set to 0), mouse tracking is very smooth, even very small, slow movements in the neighborhood of graphical entities (e.g. alignments, polylines, text etc).  Set GRAPHICSCONFIG on (set to 1), and the jerkiness returns.  I do not think this is system load dependent, because the mouse moves slowly with GRAPHICSCONFIG turned off.  That seems to be the only difference.

My guess here, is that Dell optimized the m5510 for battery life (even though I am on AC power at the moment), and constantly tries to switch the graphics to Intel HD graphics to save power.  So I wonder if the mouse pause/freeze is due to the system continually trying to switch back to Intel HD graphics?  If not, it does seem like a process keeps getting momentarily interrupted.  That's the best I've got.

My workaround is to just run with GRAPHICSCONFIG set to OFF (0), since I'm only using 2D graphics and the performance is plenty acceptable with it set to OFF.

FWIW.

<sigh>

With GRAPHICSCONFIG set to 0 (turned OFF), when I would attempt to zoom in with my mouse wheel, and then draw with various snaps turned on... the drawing performance was abysmal!  VERY jerky!  WORSE than the jerkiness experienced with fine (small) mouse movements with GRAPHICSCONFIG turned ON.  Also, with GRAPHICSCONFIG set to 0, circles were segmented as I zoomed in.  I could live with segmented arcs, circles, and curves... but the jerkiness experienced with the various snaps made it a NOGO.  I have turned GRAPHICSCONFIG back on (set to 1) and will live with the jerky mouse, unless something (or someone) else comes up.

@camptech

I've done all the tweaks to turn off everything. I've been troubleshooting acad for 20 years so know how to turn stuff off.

Its some other thing going on, and given that it happens only during a selection event, I would bet money adesk has a cursor monitoring activity that does not get turned off even though my selection preview is off. Look that otpic up in the .net forums to see what a pointmonitor is. Manusoft Periscope uses that.

If I had decent access to the developers, I could solve this in an hour and for the benefit of all users.

But they keep us at a distance and the cancer lives on.

Hello my cursor also was jerky but it is all about windows power management system settings> power and sleep> maximum power something like that 😉

Hmmm. That's an odd one for sure. I will check it out. However, my issue is intermittent and seems to only happen when I get plans from a specific architect. I cannot figure out what is causing that or why it would matter.

Your awesome, worked perfect.  I had been using CAD all day and then out of no where I would select a group of lines to stretch and the cursor would lag pause jump.

Thank you!

Uh, there are two different kinds of issues going on:

1) People with settings that are behaving properly and they are discovering how to turn off.

2) Some deep performance problem with 2018. Its as if there is a cursor monitor going on (a .net thing you can do) and its still thinking despite turning off selection preview and other stuff that might normally care about it.

I swear, some adesk programmer is like "oh ####, they noticed the shortcut we pulled instead of really turning off the feature". It might just be some display issue though too, like how lots of wipeouts mess up zooming speed.

So the watchers employed by autodesk should not dismiss item 2 because the item 1 people are finding salvation.

Hi all

same thing here with Autocad Map 2018. I get back a smooth mouse movement as soon as I turn off all the text layers!?

Cheers,

Urs

Try "DDPT(ype)" command and just ENTER

I my case the cursor becomes jerky after modifying blocks and when the dwg gets over about 6-8 Mb

DDPT brings up a Point Style Dialog box. I don't understand what the (ype) means... can you please clarify... thanks.
