Jerky Cursor in AutoCAD 2018

I've just started AutoCAD 2018 version.

I have everything working fine EXCEPT for a jerky cursor.

It works smoothly until a command is started.

Then, it takes a full second before it moves and then it jerks, almost as if a snap was set.

I've check past postings and have adjusted as suggested, but, to no avail.

I'm ready to start over and follow any suggestions you all out there might have.

Hi @KLYPHY,

Try hitting the F9 key to turn off SNAP. Does that fix the issue?

Thanks for your quick reply.

SNAP was already off.

Any other thoughts ?

Hi @KLYPHY,

What do your OSNAP settings look like? If you turn off all Osnaps (F3) does the behavior change?

If you toggle Hardware Acceleration in GRAPHICSCONFIG does that improve the behavior?

I assume this is happening in all drawings.

I have all of the osnaps off.

I did as you suggested in the GRAPHICSCONFIG.

It still is jerky.

Not only does the cursor take a moment to move, it almost seems to anticipate and will highlight a line before the cursor gets there.

Is there a magnet or something?

Hi @KLYPHY,

Perhaps this behavior is related to command preview. Here is an article that shows how to toggle it on/off.

This also might be related to selection highlighting which can also be turned on or off as described in this article.

Neither helps.

The cursor seems to "stick", so, the cursor stops moving, while I keep moving the mouse.

Then, when the cursor gets "unstuck", it jumps past what I had been hoping to select.

This is really slowing my drafting down.

I may have to go back to AutoCAD 2012 to get this project done on time.

An other ideas ?

Hi @KLYPHY,

I am sorry my suggestions have not worked.  Do you have any add-ins or customizations?

Perhaps a Reset Settings to Default will correct this behavior as I am not able to duplicate it in my "out-of-the-box" configuration.

The other two stations nearby have not had this "sticky" cursor.

One of the other drafters pointed out that PENDEAN had suggested playing with SELECTIONCYCLING concerning a "Lagging cursor".

His SELECTIONCYCLING is set to "-2" versus my "2".

I reset mine to "-2" and it helped a lot.

It is not as smooth as I'm used to, but, I'll get used to it now.

Our office has "vs" set to "vistetain".

I don't recall what "vs" originally meant.

Any help?

Try pressing F9 to turn off grid snap

I believe this issue is a bug with 2018.

I have all the same settings in 2017 and 2018, and there definitely is some issue with 2018.

I would bet its due to changes adesk made so 2018 can select dashed lines even in gap area.

That is why selectioncycling off helps, but does not solve the problem.

I wish I could unmark things as solutions, as this one is not fixed.

Hi @JamesMaeding,

LTGAPSELECTION was available in 2017 product too so I don't believe that is the issue.

ah, excellent point John.

I had not yet researched the variable so thanks for mentioning.

I will soon post a drawing that exhibits the behavior.

Turning LTGAPSELECTION off did nothing. I was so hopeful to when you said that!

Have you tried changing 'SNAPMODE' to zero?  Works every time for me...

Wireframe Visual Style may cause jerky cursor.

hmm guys, wireframe and snapmode?

Thanks, but if you read my post I say the stickiness only happens when trying to select things.

Wireframe is the lightest weight mode, shall I switch to conceptual or realistic? @Slawomir_What was the thought there?

This is not some simple issue, and is not as bad on some machines as others telling you its some graphics system issue.

Like I say though, these are dell cad machines, not exotic builds.

@JamesMaedingI see your point.

What I want to say from my experience is: cursor is sometimes jerky when actual Visual Style is Wireframe. Switching to 2D Wireframe makes cursor works fine.

As you can see reading this whole topic jerky cursor can have many roots.

@Slawomir_

right, but after you clear out all the roots associated with properly behaving features, there still seems to be some lag going on when selecting things. I would guess this is some "point monitor" action happening where its always looking at what entities are under the cursor, even when all the things are turned off such as selection preview. Only the adesk coders and serious hacker/debuggers can watch what is going on to tell. I'm not one of those.
