Import FBX with textures

Anonymous

Hello,

I’m trying to import some FBX files (like this sample attached) to AutoCad 2017 and I can’t get the textures. This FBX file originally was an OBJ file created in another software then I decimated it with Remake and then exported to AutoCad FBX format. I guess that the textures are embedded into this file.

So, when I import in AutoCad I can see it find 1 material (image bellow) but It is shown grayed. I tried to change view properties to conceptual, realistic, but I got no results. I also tried to find the material at materials list with no results.Capturar.JPG

Why am I doing wrong? Is it possible to see FBX textures in AutoCad. If it is not possible what file format should be able to do it?

Thanks,

Alfred.  looks amazing in  FBX review by autodesk.

much better than the FBX i gave you.

is there a way to make file smaller before exporting it ?   perhaps in reducing mesh ?

it took 5 minutes to load. no joke.

the FBX has no surface in Autocad.

attached are pics of both.

@john.vellek    can this be done ??  having an fbx w surface in auto cad ?

thanks  much folks.

Hello @Anonymous,

My experience with these types of meshes is that it's best to reduce the poly count in the app that created them.  If I do it in Max it may have a negative effect on the UV border edges which in this particular case would destroy the illusion.  My suggestion is to reduce in whatever app it was created in and repost it and I'd be happy to convert it again for you.  If you have Max,  I can create a screencast and post that so you know how to do it for the future if you'd like.

Best Regards,

@Alfred.DeFlaminis  would opening the FBX i sent over shed any light (pun intended)  on anything ?   its on page one of thread.

the FBX is made through a photogrammetry render.  can't make it "less"   (obj is made through photogrammetry render too)

@john.vellek

last attachment shows me choosing middle option, but i have chosen / tried all three options.

no dice on a surface coming in.

again  autodesk FBX viewer shows surface...

Hello @Anonymous,

Apologies, I'm not really sure what you're asking me.  The first FBX you posted was nice and low poly, but the other one was pretty big.  I reduced this million poly one for you, but the process takes a while.  I can't guarantee the uv borders are perfect but it's about 20% the size of the other one.  Do you also have 3ds Max?  If so, I can show you how I did all these things.  I've attached the lower poly version to this message.  I hope this helps.  I'll also get these over to John to work with as DXF's and DWG's and both high and low poly.

Best Regards,

Hi @Anonymous,

I apologize for the delay but I have actually been exploring this issue all morning long.  I have found FBX formats newer than 2009 do not work well at all.

So I am currently working with a 2006 binary format FBX. It imports into AutoCAD very quickly with one material as expected. This is the Global material. I open the Material Browser to edit the Global material. I click image and apply the Texture that @Alfred.DeFlaminis gave us earlier.

Now the big question is on scale of the sample size and whether or not it should have any tiling (I suspect not).

I also think that this original file had Normals issues which might explain why this texture is not applying correctly.

Capture.PNG

With the newer format FBX I went through the same process but then also had to drag the Global material onto the model for it to display.

I am not sure that I am going to get any further on this as from what I understand, the FBX file itself has some errors in it that would need to be corrected. I hope though that this steps might help you to get where you need to be on this process.

I don't know much about AutoCAD but I agree with John that there is an issue in there somewhere with importing UV's on poly objects in AutoCAD.  Probably needs to be logged into the tracker.

For what it's worth I just ran a quick test of the FBX from the first post. I brought it into Navisworks and it looks fine. Export it to FBX from Navisworks and this is the resulting material mapping in AutoCAD.

Using Navisworks Manage 2017, AutoCAD Civil 3D 2017 and default FBX export settings in Navisworks. Thoughts??

To me it seems like AutoCAD seems to be dropping UV's on import.  Weird.

I saw that. But the realistic display shows the material warped, for lack of a better word.

Maybe try a new export from the source file using different settings?

@Matt__W  if you read this whole thread.  i got FBX's showing great in viewers.

i got 2 and 3 sourced FBX'S.

I got ones exported by autodesk.  both from fbx and from obj.

in this thread.

can someone open an FBX and tell me the material stayed with it ?

can someone say they have successfully imported an fbx and saw texture on it ?

maybe it only works in auto cad 3d ?   (I'm trying desperately to get a client that uses auto cad)

(trying a freelancers online hiring so i can get info quicker,  but please reply ??)

@john.vellek

have you done this successfully  ?   i cant tell from what you were doing if it ended in success.??

i tried adding FBX  w object in new layer.. current layer ..and by material.

then tried w layer 1 or 2 selected all that you did.

add image to global. texture editor. turn off tiling. link texture transforms. no link texture transforms (just adds image on top. not desired result)

i tried material assign.

have you done this successfully  ?   i cant tell from what you were doing if it ended in success.??

Hi @Anonymous,

I have not had success with this process because I feel that the original FBX file has too many issues as pointed out by @Alfred.DeFlaminis.

As I also indicated, there are known issues with AutoCAD and newer versions (more current than 2009 format) of FBX files.  I did have moderate results when the FBX file was saved as an older version but without knowing the scaling of the texture that is applied to material there isn't much else that I can provide.

Alfred.DeFlaminis also pointed out that he thinks the import into AutoCAD might be disregarding the UV's from the file coming out of 3DS Max.

So, I don't have a fix for you. When a clean 3DS Max file was created from scratch ,  a material applied, and then exported as a 2009 binary FBX file, it imported correctly into AutoCAD although the texture still had to be applied to the material.

In addition to MY files i uploaded a pig FBX

IN ADDITION IN ADDITION IN ADDITION

i am asking the simple simple simple question

have you successfully ever ever in auto cad regular  ever  ever uploaded an fbx and either saw texture right away

or

added a texture map afterward and it worked.

I'm begging you to read my post. not this bridge.

please answer the simple question.

please.

here is my posts all over again.

can you see a texture when you open it.

ON ANY fbx file.  can you see any texture or apply a texture map successfully ?

((regular auto cad))

attached.

an fbx.

a screen grab. or fbx in a viewer

a screen grab in auto cad.

i can add all the steps in screen grabs to add material but you are not reply to ME. only the bridge image in the first bits of this thread.

HI @Anonymous,

As i stated in my last post, yes, I tested creating a new 3DS MAX 2009 FBX binary file and successfully imported it into AutoCAD but I still had to apply the texture to the material.

Regarding your file, I believe that @Alfred.DeFlaminis also tested this process on that file but I will confirm with him this morning.
