I'm trying to make a 3D cylinder with a curved cutout shown in this screen shot

I'm tring to make a 3d Model of a cylinder with a cutout that looks like this 2d drawing. The cylinder is hollowed out, but I don't know how to get a smooth cut. Can someone help me with this?

That would be a nice 3D model. But I think you misunderstand the intent of the original sketch. The point is to display both end of the cylinder object in a single view. THen display a dimension telling you the overall length. Had they tried to display the overall length, it wouldn't fit on the sheet.  🙂

 

So draw the 3d cylinder length based on the dimension and no need for the "break".

If you actually want a 3d break, you need a side view as well. The top view does not offer enough detail. The top doesn't indicate any hidden lines. You could guess what its supposed to look like. 

 

If I had to guess, maybe its a simple s surve vertical slice through the cylinder. Then on one side of the cylinder, maybe you extrude the bottom half outward?

@JLJZPWBF  Challenge accpeted !

 

1 - draw a square with a break line symbol on top, make into a region

2 - draw a circle = size of base of square. Rotate 3d to get correct oreientation

3 - extrude both. Subtract blue cylinder from purple break cube

4 - draw a yellow circrle inside shape, extrude & subtract

5 - make a copy, rotate 3d 2 times to get it into the correct orientation

6 - brag about it to your friends 😎

You dont need a side view because that type of break symbol is used for round pipe.

This way gives a result that looks well from all directions, without the widow's-peak points:

With some simple UCS adjustments, draw the four Arcs [white] around a square [blue] with a Point [red] in the center, and JOIN the Arcs into a 3D Spline.

LOFT in Surface mode from the Point to that Spline [second item in the image].

Center that on the pipe [green] as in the fourth item with the tutu, and SLICE the pipe using that Surface, and keeping Both sides -- move one of those away from the other [fifth item].

The Arcs used for this are less than full half-circles [I tried that first, but the results looked too "extreme"] -- their rise is not half but 3/8 of their base.  You can fine-tune that as you prefer.

I used thicken on the surface and subtracted it and it worked perfectly.
