How to switch user without reinstalling

Is there a way to switch the user profile associated with CAD 2015 without having to do a full reinstall of the program?

In Civil3d 2014 we used to do a soft reset if we needed to reset CAD back to default settings by running the following in a batch file:

reg delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\AutoCAD\R19.1\ACAD-D000:409 /f

rmdir "c:\users\%username%\appdata\Roaming\Autodesk\C3D 2014" /S /Q

rmdir "c:\users\%username%\appdata\Local\Autodesk\C3D 2014" /S /Q

As you know you get errors when you install CAD and then log in as another user and try to open it. If another user needed to use CAD on that computer we could log in as the regular user, run the script above, and then log in as the new user and launch CAD. This was very handy if we were in a pinch.

I have used the Reset Default Settings tool in the start menu to fix issues in 2015 but it doesn't seem useful for switching user profiles because at the end of the settings reset it launches CAD which seems to recreate the reg files that it deletes.

Am I doing this wrong? What is the easy way to switch the install to another user?

Thanks.

AFAIK the folder in "Program Files" is for everyone.
It's the building of the individual profiles that might be confusing.
For each HKCU-profile created on a workstation, the first time AutoCAD is launched, the individual files associated with AutoCAD is built. It has nothing to do with anything inside the Program Files area.

If you can get one HKCU-profile to "see" another HKCU-profile with other programs, I have not heard of ACAD being able to do this.

As a suggestion, Run -> REGEDIT and go into the HKCU and export the ACAD profile. Edit this ASCII text based file with notepad or equal and assign a new HKCU path. Save and exit. When in the new HKCU-profile, double click this REG file and it will be loaded. If one exists, it will be overwritten.

However ACAD made this easy to do by exporting the profile as a ARG file and one can import into the new HKCU-profile (unsure here). Command OPTIONS, Profiles tab. The ARG file is also ASCII text based and can be edited just like the REG file.

[limited testing]

Hi Steve,

What you can do is export the settings from AutoCAD and then put that ZIP file somewhere that anyone can access. Whoever needs it can then import it and be all set. The settings export/import options are under Start > All Programs > Autodesk > AutoCAD 20xx > Migrate Custom Settings. However, not all versions of AutoCAD have this. You mentioned AutoCAD Civil 3D... which is one that does not. Using a profile ARG file like Scot mentioned would be the way to go, or use the folder copying method you already figured out. You can put the profile ARG in a common place and edit the AutoCAD shortcut on the desktop to load it.

It might also be possible to create a login script or batch file that copies things over. That would run each time a user logs in. You could probably make it check somehow so that it only does it once.

I'm not trying to migrate any settings within cad. I'm simply trying to login to windows as another user, launch cad, and not get errors.

Deleting the registry entries i listed in the original post and then logging in as the new user fixed the issue in 2014, and I am trying to figure out the way to do this for 2015 because it doesn't seem to work when I delete the 2015 version of these ref keys.

Hi Steve,

Please start another forum thread. You are having a problem that is more than just wanting to know if there is a way to transfer AutoCAD settings between users. Please attach screen shots in the new thread of the errors you get when launching AutoCAD. Please also note the exact versions of AutoCAD (i.e., plain AutoCAD 2015 or Civil 3D 2015) and your Windows operating system along with the bit type (e.g., Windows 7 64-bit).

I do not want to if there is a way to transfer AutoCAD settings between users. That is not the question I asked. My original question still remains unanswered. How do you log in as a different user on a computer and launch cad without errors?

There shouldn't be anything special that needs to be done. Any user logs in and launches AutoCAD. The program installs available to all users. There should not be any errors. That is why it seems you have a greater issue going on. It sounds like something that maybe should be posted in the installation forum with a subject title along the lines of "Secondary users get errors when launching AutoCAD" or something to that effect. I think people may see the title of this thread and not fully realize what is happening.

How we do it:
New user walks up to old PC.
Logs in as new user.
Starts AutoCAD: AutoCAD starts up with an OOTB profile.

Nothing special to do once the new user has a log-in established on the server and the user's OS/Server credentials are added to the old PC.

What is your challenge Steve? What happens differently for you all? Why the need to edit the registry?

"As you know you get errors when you install CAD and then log in as another user and try to open i" That is not supposed to ever happen.

Exactly Dean. Steve, not that I'm trying to avoid helping you out, but it does sound like some type of install problem, so posting over in the installation forum would get the attention of the experts over there. Here's the link:

Is it a case of corrupt windows profile for the user? Did you try creating a new profile for the user?

If we experience issues we always try initiating the secondary installer in the user profile... http://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Reiniti...

Hi Steve, were you able to start another thread in the installation forum or were you able to sort out the problem?

@pendean Here's what is happening:

New user walks up to old PC.
Logs in as new user.

Starts C3D. Says Windows is configuring C3D

C3D launches

error that c3d.cuix is missing. No big deal, it gets re-created and the error is gone next time you launch C3D.

ribbon has no tabs loaded

cui command, transfer tab, open c3d.cuix from a clean install, drag workspaces over.

ribbon has tabs now, with ?'s for icons

repair C3D, Reinstall C3D, no changes.

Restore to Default settings doesn't help either.

Full uninstall/reinstall fixes the issue. Is there a way to avoid this?
