How to install AutoCAD 2017 – Best Practices

What are best practices for installing AutoCAD 2017? How do I prepare my workstation for a successful stand-alone installation?

These are steps I like to take when setting up an installation for a new/or upgrade installation of AutoCAD 2017. I call it Best Practices for Installation.

  • Verify that the workstation meets all of the minimum hardware requirements
  • Verify that the graphics card is on the recommended or certified list and has current drivers
  • Verify that the Internet connection is fast and stable if downloading my software.
  • Verify that the operating system is supported and that it is fully up-to-date with all updates and service packs
  • Turn off security software
    • Anti-virus
    • Anti-spyware
    • Anti-malware
    • Endpoint protection suites
  • Clear the TEMP folder.
    • Close all running applications
    • Start button>Run field: %temp%
    • Delete all files in the Temp folder
  • Run a system backup/Create a Restore Point
  • Install as an Administrator of the workstation.
  • Have your Licensing information ready
    • Serial Number
    • Product Key
    • Autodesk account information
    • Download your software and save to an accessible location
    • DVD
    • USB Flash Drive
  • Migrate only after you verify that everything is working properly
  • Create new PC3 files to reflect your system printers

John,

I think you got it all !!!

Note on my side:   Being a world-wide company and all PC's are controled  by corporate IT.

We can not disable the Security software.( it won't let us)

But I've been installing AutoCAD here for 15 years and have never had a problem with installs

while security sofware is running.

Also a note:   Many "Quick-Fix" solutions for Autodesk products is to "Edit the Registry"

We can not "Edit the Registry" if has been "Locked-Out".

Autodesk should address these problems with a "Hot-Fix" that will make the needed changes.

Thanks

Ron

I have installed AutoCAD 2019 and it shows up in the program folder just below the older version AutoCAD 2018.

Can I delete the 2018 version now?

HI @tor3B3UK,

Once you have installed a newer version, you can elect to remove or retain the prior release.  I suggest you leave it installed for a little while to make sure that the 2019 version behaves as expected.

2017 Autocad is not available any more, you won't get activation code for it anyway.

Your basic study is Civil Enginering, then get the latest Civil 3d
