How to fix a screwed up file that doesn't want to open?

Having an issue with a drawing file that won't open. We're using Carlson 2014 and Civil 3D 2014.

We've got a drawing of property exhibits that apparently has something wrong with it or is pulling some sort of error from our server- we don't know exactly what the issue is.

If you try to open the drawing from the server, it loads to about 6% on the status bar on the bottom, then locks up and won't go any further (still with a black screen).

If you copy it to your desktop, it will actually load to where you can see the objects in the drawing, but right after that locks up and won't go any further.

We have a backup file that you can copy, change to a dwg, and open and it works fine, but as soon as you save it, it does the same things noted above. I did this last week, ran an audit and purge on the file before saving, yet it still has the same issue.

I tried running a recover on the drawing, it goes clear through the recovery process, says there are no errors, brings up the drawing and then locks up.

We're at a loss here- is there any way to diagnose what the issue is with this particular file and fix it?

Try to INSERT the corrupt drawing file into new drawing file.

Only the model objects will be inserted, but its better than losing the drawing 100%.

Honestly if it only copies model space objects that won't do us much good, the exhibits are all in the tabs and the vast majority of the text is in paper space.

Its a good test though, to see if the drawing can be recovered at all.

I just tried it and it appears it locks up when you try to insert it as well.

I was told some other people here have had luck with opening the files, so I don't think they're completley corrupted...just not sure why it won't open.

The file can be opened by someone else, on another computer?

I was told a couple people were able to open them before by copying to the desktop, changing the file name and opening, but not always...sometimes it would work sometimes not. I'm gonna check with some of the others guys here and see who had success with it.

download and install that other CAD software called DRAFTSIGHT (the free version is good enough): it usually opens files AutoCAD has a hard time with (they you can SAVE or AUDIT or WBLOCK of anything else you want to to do with it and reopn in AutoCAD), but if it too cannot open it then your file is totally hosed.

I can't remember if I have had the similar issue.

You may make a copy to your local drive and log-off the server. Then give a try.

You may alos ask the person who creates the drawing  to open it.

If he/she can, save it to an earlier version (i.e Civil 3d 2013). Then you try it on your pc.
