How to break/explode object imported from step file so I can edit?

Hi,

I've currently run into a problem with 3D modelling

A customer build a step file from ProE, which is the attached file as below

I've managed to successfully import the file, everything works fine ... until I tried to edit it.

For beginner, I just started playing around with 3D modelling (in CAD) recently (mostly was doing in 2D in the past), so it would be nice if anyone can go abit of detail about the steps

Anyways, back to the subject. I am trying to edit the position of the holes, but whenever I tried to select the cylinder of space, it highlights the entire object.

I do have a little bit of experience with Maya, so I was thinking by converting the object into CVs, I can work with the edges/splines, but that doesn't seem to work.

So ... It'd be nice if anyone can give me a little handy tip on how to resolve this issue.

Thanks in advance 😄

Hi,

welcome @Anonymous.autodesk.com!

>> I do have a little bit of experience with Maya

Are you speaking about Maya or AutoCAD ... as this forum here is about AutoCAD (Maya forum would be >>>there<<<)

In AutoCAD the object after import is a block, you'll have to explode it to have access to the 3D-Solid and so access to it's faces/edges/points.

Yes, I did try exploding, but the entire thing is still remain as an object (even inside block edit mode)

PS: Yes, I'm talking about AutoCAD, after all, I did post it in AutoCAD section, no? 🙂

Hi,

Yes, you are in the AutoCAD forum, all ok.

I was just surprised that you mention Maya in your post, but not AutoCAD ... making me thinking about "you only use Maya". That's why I asked back 😉

It is one 3D-Solid, of course. To select it's points/edges/faces you have to use <STRG><Mouse click on entity>. Look to >>>that help<<< which descibes a lot about subobject selection

And as you stated in the first message:

>> A customer build a step file from ProE

AutoCAD can import Pro/E files, maybe you get then a better structure then from a plain STEP-file.
