How do I make / create / export a .shp file?

I need some help for how to make / create / export a .shp file for use with linetypes.

I have found a lot of references online for how to use these files and what they are used for in linetypes, how to reference them, and how to compile the file. But I haven't yet found how do I actually make my own .shp file? I am using AutoCAD 2016 (2D).

Do I save or export as an .shp (haven't found that option), or is there a command I can type in the command line?

I am guessing this is so simple that there are very few posts about it. I just need help getting to the first step.

Thanks in advance!

DH

Thanks to TheCADnoob that was a really helpful screencast.

Now my next question is, if I want to view / edit / update an ".shx" file how would I do that?

I'd like to add a few shapes to the standard ltypeshp.shx file (in the "....\enu\Support" folder).  I can then distribute this file to others once it includes some additional shapes that are currently missing.

Thanks again,

DH
