HELP: How to automatically open drawings on a server locally

I'm working for a surveying company. The last few years we only worked in 2D-models, but as the market is changing, we want to make the step to 3D.

However, we are currently experiencing sudden freezes while working in certain (larger) drawings. (lag spikes while rotating an object or our view. These lagspikes also occur when executing certain commands with a large amount of objects)

We have decent systems, a few years old, but decent enough (i7-9700, 16GB RAM & Nvidia Quadro P400).

After a little research I found out that the fileserver is the bottleneck in the process. Since our computer never exceeds a 50% load.

Our IT-guy suggests upgrading all the networkcards (from 1 GBps to 10GBps) and while that looks like a viable option, it doesn't help our colleagues working from home. Besides that, I'm not certain whether we have the newest CAT-cables in our office (probably only CAT5e or CAT6).

In my opinion, these lagspikes could be fixed if we stored our drawings locally. However, they need to be accesible to all our colleagues.

Is there a way to temporarilly save the drawings you are working in locally? So the networkconnection isn't the bottleneck. When we are done with the drawing, it should automatically upload to the server.

There is no office fix for remote users' slow access issues if that is the correct solution for your file access of large files problem. Sorry.
Well, not unless you all wish to purchase Gig network connections for all of your staff at home too.

You all could adopt a file check-in/check-out system if that is an option: explore the Autodesk VAULT product offering as one solution.

Thanks for replying.

I shouldn't have mentioned the remote users. Since the problem occurs in office.

Our dataserver has a maximum network speed of 1Gbps (+- 110MBps), while our local SSD easily tops that.

In my opinion, this low speed is the reason for these lagspikes. Autodesk VAULT might be a solution for that (first time I heard about the Vault, so i need to read up).

I know Microsoft Outlook has it's own temporary folder in %appdata% where it locally stores attachments for quick access. I would like to know whether this is possible for AutoCAD as well.

(might be more of a Windows question, rather then AutoCAD)

Have you looked into bim 360 and the online options?

More things to try in the interim https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Slow-d...

>>>...I found out that the fileserver is the bottleneck in the process...<<<
Other things to ensure: all users are connected through a Lan Switch to the server, not a hub anywhere along the way https://www.naukri.com/learning/articles/difference-between-hub-and-switch/

Network bottlenecks should only occur while you are opening or saving or anything to do with file access like with autosaves.  Otherwise going 3D mode is graphics card related. Have you tried replacing the graphics card with Autodesk certified on one computer to test?
