Hatch selection problems

Has anyone had similar problems to this?

I have a drawing, parts of which have been imported from and architectural plan, where I am adding my work.

If I try to hatch sections of my work I get messages such as "selecting all".

If I move the items into a blank section of the drawing and hatch them, it works no problem and then I can move it back to the correct place.

I have never had this before and I assume it is a setting in part of the drawing that was imported?

Avoid letting AutoCAD find a boundary: it has to select everything on screen it finds first. This bout drawing a boundary and selecting it to hatch or freeze and lock the layers of the other objects temporarily until you finish hatching.

Hi,

Hatch is very sensitive with other parts locate surround the hatch area,and that's clear from your second try which done properly and succeed. 

so if do you want to use hatch you have to zoom the area you want to hatch and avoid any sophisticated geom appear with it.

I have been using autocad since 1995 and quite obviously in that time have done a fair bit of hatching, that is why this one seems odd to me.

One instance of this problem was hatching a very distinct area. A rectangle formed using the rectangle command. There are no apparent over lapping edges nor othe regions that could confuse but if I select the area inside the rectangle I get the normal "selecting everything do you really want this" question.

So I re-drew the rectangle using polyline and made sure there were no chances of a gap for hatch leakage. Still the same.  I moved the rectangle out of the present drawing zone.....but not by much.  Still the same.  Then I moved the rectangle way off piste......around 100,000mm. It then hatched no problem and I could then move the rectangle and the hatch 100,000mm back.  The drawings is of a building 30 metres wide to give you an idea of how far I moved the rectangle to get it to hatch.

The comments all relate to the "pick points" method of selecting the hatched area which is what I have always used. If I zoom in very close to the rectangle then this can sometimes result in successful selection.

I have just drawn a range of rectangles over the drawing, some in the drawing and some way off the drawing line. Many of them refuse to be selected when zoomed out, but zoom close up and the selection works.

My confusion is I have many drawings over the years where selecting large complex parallel lines (walls in a large building) has worked without issue. Hence why I am confused that a simple rectangular selection can be taking so much of my time!  🙂

Unless you are using the same AutoCAD version from 1995 this is no longer a mantra to chant: AutoAD evolves, not always for the better, and our DWG file are way more complex than from 21-years ago.

Honestly, without us looking at your file ourselves and trying it ourselves with this "simple rectangular selection" we can only offer tips that do work for most of us. Let us know how you'd like to proceed, most of us responding to your posts have also been using AutoCAD for as long as you if not longer and none of us wok for Auotdesk.

The drawing I am working on at the moment is in lt 2007 which is why I entered the question in the Autocad 2007/2008/2009 "section".

So are you saying that later versions will not allow you to simply click within the centre of a rectangle you wish to hatch?

The point I was making was not part of a "**** measuring" look at my experience exercise :-). More to point out that what I am doing is no different to what I have done for the past 20 years from lt 95, 98 and several others till 2007 and this one particular drawing is showing a weird dislike for something I have done many times before.

Parts of the drawing have been imported from an Architects plan so may be an influence.

I am hearing that 2007 has a few quirks and instabilities and it regularly crashes when I open another drawing to reference whilst working on my main drawing. Perhaps just time to subscribe to the latest version?

No, I'm saying that without us testing your exact issue in your own file with your own object where you have the problem we can only offer true and tested methods of hatching that avoid all the hassles you describe. Not much else is being said, all of us here have day jobs and use AutoCAD all day long too.

I'm enjoying AutoCAD/LT2017 myself, no issues yet.
