frequently interrupting typing in AutoCAD 2018

Whenever I try to type in the command line or in the edit attribute dialog box AutoCAD only lets me enter a character or two before it selects another window as active preventing me from entering anything. The command line just drops what I entered like I hit esc, and the attribute dialog box goes grey like I have clicked outside of the window. My coworker is having the same problem and I can't figure out what is going on. Anyone else seen something like this?

Hi @Anonymous,

This sounds really strange.  Is the autocomplete feature doing this or is it a Windows thing?  When your cursor moves elsewhere after you start typing, where does it go? Is it to another window inside of AutoCAD or to a different program?

What other programs are running at the same time as AutoCAD? I would suggest that you kill everything you can inside of Task Manger while AutoCAD is running to see if the behavior continues.  Can you make a Screencast video so I can see this in action?

Hey John, I closed everything but AutoCAD and it is still happening. No other program is having issues so I am pretty sure it is an AutoCAD problem. The cursor doesn't move the "focus" of AutoCAD just changes greying out the attribute editor box and completely erasing anything I have entered into the command line. I don't have the tools to make a video of it happening, but there really isn't much to see. The dialog box goes grey like I clicked outside of autocad, but the command line just completely disappears and I am still in autocad because I can move the cursor and if I click out of autocad with a command entered it usually leaves a little white box with the text in it. I have attached a picture of the greyed out dialog box if that helps.

Thanks,

Josh

Hi @Anonymous,

OK, I am at a loss. I have never seen this type of thing before so I am not sure how to have you proceed.  Screencast is free. Can you install it and capture the sequence you follow when this happens?  When did this start happening or has it always happened with AutoCAD 2018 on your computer? All drawings?

If you log on to your computer as a brand new user, without any modifications or customizations, does this behavior still occur?

Hi,

can you please create a new Windows user account, login into that, start AutoCAD (without any customization) and try the same again, same issue?

If that works and does not show that impact, then please login to your original account and reset settings to default as described >>>here<<< (if you are then asked for migrate settings from a previous AutoCAD release please do not do that).

I had a problem with a focus stealing caused by the mouse driver of multi button gaming mice Roccat KONE. I was using more profiles for different programs... the switching caused the problem. When I unified them into a single profile, the problem was gone. But it was frustrating experience I can tell...

Hey John, here is a screencast showing the issue. It just recently started happening and I have been using 2018 for a couple months with no issues. It happens on every drawing and is happening on my coworker's machine as well.

Thanks,

Josh

Hey Alfred, I had the same issue when I tried to work on a new account with no customizations.

hi @Anonymous,

I don't see your Screencast embedded or attached. Can you try again?

Did you check your mouse/pointer driver as suggested by @ВeekeeCZ?

Hey Beekee, I am just using a standard wired mouse that came with the computer from dell. I have been using it with 2018 without issue for a number of months so I don't think it is the mouse. And yes it is very frustrating to only be able to enter 1 character at a time and not be able to use the command line.

Thanks,

Josh

Hopefully the screencast shows up on this one. I can see it in the preview...

Screencast will be displayed here after you click Post.

Hi @Anonymous,

I am afraid I still do not see your Screencast. Here are instructions on how to embed in case you missed a step. If this isn't the problem, you might try a different browser or open the Screencast, copy the URL and paste that into a post.

Hi @Anonymous

" I have been using 2018 for a couple months with no issues. It happens on every drawing and is happening on my coworker's machine as well."

This is a red flag. Do you and your coworker have laptops with a touchpad? Also - can you click your Windows Icon and type "WINVER" and tell us what version and build of Windows you are using. One of the recent updates loaded a driver update that is causing similar issues with some clients.

I did what that showed and it still is not working the the preview tab of this post (just puts in text that says "screencast will be displayed here"), can you not use the link?

Hey Warren, I do not use a laptop, the mouse is my only pointer device. I am using windows 10 version 1511(os build 10586.1356).

Thanks,

Josh

Because this has started recently, I would have said it's an update to Windows, but that is a really OLD version of WIndows. Has your Virus scan been updated recently? Can you disable it for a little while while you test this out?

Hi @Anonymous,

The Screencast did "stick" this time and I will take a look. In the mean time, please take a peek at the system requirements for AutoCAD 2018.  Your OS build is old enough that it does not appear to meet the requirements.

The only virus protection I use is windows defender. I recently downloaded malwarebytes after having this issue wondering if it could be the solution, but only ran it once with no change in the issue.

Thanks,

Josh
