File Tabs missing after clean screen

Anonymous
Not applicable

I have tried everything to get my open files tab back.  When I open  two or more files on my laptop (Autocad 2014) I have the multiple files open tab, and I can turn it off and on with either the ribbon button or the command line filetab/ filetabclose, but after using the clean screen option to better see a drawing then going back to normal viewing area the file tabs disappear, and neither ribbon or command line will bring it back. But after closing both drawings and reopenning them the file tabs are there until I use the clean screen command then click it again and file tabs are missing. I have tried multiple files so I know it is not a file issue. And now I have found that if I switch workspaces from one and back to mine they return, but after reopening drawings they are gone again. Is there a global system setting that needs to be changed?

Hi @JamesMaeding,

Here is an article with some more options to resolve this issue including:

  • Turn off the Clean Screen
  • Turn on the Ribbon
  • Change Workspaces
  • Manually turn on Toolbars.

I hope one of these solutions gets your user up and running normally.

no, they won't because the cleanscreen command, and whatever it relies upon, is broken.

Restting once in a while is ok, but the cleanscreen messes up filetab repeatedly.

Broken items should not be marked as solved in this DG.

Autodesk should protect the value of its own DG by keeping an eye on this.

I completely agree, I am the CAD Manager at my office and we see this issue on multiple stations so it is definitely a bug, but as of now no simple solution has been found.

Hey thanks for trying to figure this out, but have you read all of our past comments? That is obviously the first thing we tried, not that simple "mate". Sorry if I sound rude but this problem has been going on for almost 2 years now, and not 1 single person, even an Autodesk professional can figure it out. I have been working with AutoCad for almost 10 years now and have just gotten used to their buggy program. But thanks for stating the obvious "mate".

i am not sure if this is what is being asked about, but try setting your menu bar to 1 of 0 (command: menubar)

Nope, that is just the basic menu bar off or on command, but thank you. It is the clean screen command ( ctrl + 0) or clean screen button in bottom right of screen. To this date after almost 3 years since I posted this, no one has an answer, not even Autodesk. I just have to close drawing and reopen and the file tabs are back. It's just another glitch that we have learned to live with.

Hi @Anonymous,

I am still unable to duplicate this on my computer.  When you turn off the clean screen can you check the FILETABSTATE variable? Perhaps a workaround would be to create a macro to set it back to on.

Just went through hell and such trying to find an answer and nobody seemed to be able to help.  After typing toolbar...show... all, all tool bars came back randomly everywhere in the screen making it hellish to intend to work.  Started typing ribbon at the command line, and after the 5th time all the ribbons and palettes popped orderly up top .... Voilá!!!  Hope this helps someone 🙂

No that does not help. It is more likely you set a workspace current so the toolbars jumped back.

Maybe if you explain what you did 5 times that would be useful.

Maybe you typed ribbonclose between? you did not say but typing ribbon 5 times is the same as 1 time.

Switching workspaces worked for me, thanks!

who accepted this as a solution?

I'm hearing people say we must switch the workspace, but that is no solution as that has bad side effects depending on your setup.

Either way, that is admitting this is a bug, its not solved.

Its like anyone can jump in and mark as solution, with no recourse from the rest of us, like a thumbs down.

Hi @JamesMaeding,

I marked the solution as another customer indicated that it worked for him. I have reviewed other customer cases as well and this solution worked for them too.  It might not work in all cases. In fact, no matter how I try I have never been able to even duplicate the behavior on my computer.  I would wager that some customization or changes in the user's workspace might trigger this behavior in the first place.  I know that this issue has also been brought to the attention of the QA team for evaluation.

Thank your for your input on this issue. I feel that this solution should be marked as it will get many if not most customers with this issue to a normal working state.

Great that it worked for others, except that workspaces themselves have major problems so using them will cause even greater confusion.

In particular, they often make toolbars dissappear.

The fact is, Autodesk dug a hole with the CUI system and now people are calling workarounds "solutions".

Its not solved, an undesirable workaround has been identified.

Casual users will say that is being picky.

Those that support 100 people and have history with adesk products will say its still broke.

Who do you listen to? The guy that bought one seat, or 100?

I do mean bought, we are on maint sub not nasty rental.

I agree, that not a solution.

Switching workspaces, clearing ribbons etc. that a workaround, and not a very good one.  It is adding extra unneeded steps in the workflow for the Drawing Office.  The bug is still there and It needs to be fixed.

I was playing around with the built in hot keys lately, Example: Ctrl + 9 for toggling the command line. And at some point, I removed the file tabs from just underneath the ribbon.

I attempted to find a solution, I also used FILETAB to attempt to turn them back on, I tried FILETABOFF and then undo thinking that I could back it out of some error that it is creating.

Doubtfully this will work for you after so long, but here is what I did to resolve this. I closed all of the files, within AutoCAD, one by one until I did not have a drawing left (an empty application if you would) I was going to attempt to use the STARTMODE to see if it would put that annoying tab back up that we got rid of a long time ago (I am assuming that everyone gets rid of this tab at some point). Anyway, I had to open a blank template drawing to use the command line to type in STARTMODE, but once I opened the template, the File tabs appeared with the blank template drawing.

I hope this works.

Regards,

JPS

Better yet, use WORKSPACE, SAveas, before you CLEANSCREENON. then if it happens, just change workspace to anything, then back again. Even better yet! Make 2 identical workspaces, then just switch 1 time to fix all tools, menus etc.
