fail to trim hatching

I want to use a polyline to trim a hatching. I am sure both the trim line and hatching are on the same plane. However, in many cases, it fails to trim the hatching. any ideas of the reason?

Two items come to mind.

a) Are you selecting the object to trim to?
command TRIM [Enter] [Enter] is stubborn for trimming hatch.

b) Is the hatch pattern definition part of the acad.pat file or a
file that is in a folder as part of the SFSP?
To test this one out, grip edit the hatch and try to change the
scale/spacing from within the Properties floating window.
If this fails then erase and start over with a pattern that does.
As an alternate, keyword search the customization area "get pat".
This allows one to "fetch" the pattern definition. After external
file is created, chase it down and place in current directory.
