Extract data into Excel "Delete me"

I see from several searches that this problem has been around for several years and through several releases of AutoCAD.  I see all kinds of work around suggestions.  What I don't see is a fix.  Saturday 5/30/2015, most of the day, I was extracting data from serveral of my AutoCAD drawings.  Putting together an extracted data data base. Monday 6/1/2015, I open a drawing and extract the data to an Excel file.  When I open the Excel file it tells me it is in "compatibilty mode" and the only data extracted into the file is the words "'Delete me" in the A1 cell.  What the hell happened and how do I fix it???

I remember that this issue is because you save the excel file to a networked drive. Or probably because the DWG file is in networked drive. I can't remember which one exactly.

The workaround is to work in local drive or save the extraction to csv format.

I used to get this issue even when not working/saving to a network but just on my loacal hard drive.

The way I found to get it to work was to let the data save as a CSV file (one of the options). This can then be opened in Excel in the usual way & saved as an

XLS file.

I have not used it for a while but I would think the same way should still work

Hope this helps :smileyhappy

If this works for you please mark as solved then it will help others in the future

WILLKERBY2479 did one of the suggestions offered here help you with this issue? If so, can you mark the solution as accepted?

Hi Willkerby2479,

We have had the same problem at my workplace - however we were mixed, most users where extracting to an excel file, I was extracting out to a text (CSV) file.  Mine would work 100% of the time - the extraction out to excel was hit and miss - it would either work, or show the "delete me".  I was able to track down the cause (in our case anyways) to an apostrophe.  If an apostrophe appears any where in the drawing(s) file path or name that you are trying to exract from, you will get that error.

I was getting the same "Deleteme" in the .xls file export.

DWG file and XLS save location were on the network. Both had apostrophes in the file name.

As suggested by @Anonymous I removed all apostrophes from the file name that is being saved (not the DWG).

Now it works fine.

Hi

Im sorry I´ve been dealing with this issue from about 4 hours ago, I still dont know what the hell happened, because 5 hours ago it was exporting the information from autocad to excel perfectly fine, that "DeleteMe" suddenly appeared, anyways, I still dont get that about deleting the apostrophes, I mean, I had changed the name from letters to numbers and I still have the same problem, do you perhaps have a link or something that could possibly had other solutions, or at least graphic solutions to this?I already tried what you wrote there, but nothing has worked.... HEEEELP!  😞

Please note that the DeleteMe problem was caused by Microsoft's October Windows Update and has been fixed by November Windows Update.

@Anonymous

a) Your System is not uptodate, update your windows and the problem is solved.
OR
b) Your Path/Filename incl. Apostrophes, remove them and the problem is solved.

I can't believe this is the solution to my problem, but this is exactly it. I never would have thought of that as the issue. Thank you.
