External reference update balloon notification reports wrong user

In Release 2021 I have noticed that when an Xref gets modified, the balloon notification that pops up to tell you that it has been modified by, is reporting the wrong user name? Has anyone else noticed this random anomaly?

Hi,

try to use WHOHAS command just to check if you have the same user name . You can use WHOHAS to find out who has a specified drawing file open. >> Click <<

Great idea. The next time I got the balloon notification, I use the who has command, and it came up with "unknown". I'm almost starting to wonder where this balloon notification captures its data from.

unknown simply implies that the file is no longer open by someone else. I too am getting this issue.
Thanks

@Kevin.Spear I wanted you to reread message #2 above to help solve the mystery.

that only helps if the user is still in the reference file. If that person saved and closed, then you get the 'unkown' result. My issue is not identifying the current user, that is actually known. The problem is that AUTOCAD is identifying the previous user of that reference file in the notification, not the actual last person who saved the file.

Let me reset the situation. You reference a file (DWG B) last saved by USER B into your file (DWG A). You notice a change needs to be made, so you open DWG B and make the edit yourself, save and close. Back in DWG A, the xref notification opens and says USER B modified the file and needs to be reloaded. Clearly, USER A made the change and not USER B.

Second step, USER A then notices another edit to DWG B that is needed. DWG B is opened again by USER A and edits made, saved and closed. Switching back to DWG A displays the xref notification that USER A made a change to DWG B and needs to be reloaded.

The above happens without any customizations to AutoCAD and happens in 2022 and 2023 to different users in different companies.
Thanks
Kevin

Any update on this? We are having this exact problem in 2023, did not happen in 2020.

In regards to message #2, I don't have the same user name in this issue. My test files came from another company I am working with. His username is not even in our domain. Any other thoughts?
Thanks
Kevin

i have not gotten any further clarification. I finally submitted a case to Autodesk. Obviously, reloading the XREF does show the correct geometry even if the username is wrong. For now, we are ignoring the name and moving forward. You could turn off xref notification and just reload as needed (XREFNOTIFY to ZERO) or let AutoCAD reload them when opening a file.

Thanks
Kevin

@Kevin.Spear, was Autodesk able to resolve this issue for you? I work with large teams, and a PM asked me to investigate this issue as they're tired of asking the wrong person about changes they didn't make 😄

I have not. The support case was pushed up to development. I am reaching out to them to get some update as its been about 5-6 months since the original case.
Thanks

I have seen a similar issue in AutoCAD/Civil 3D 2020 and also in AutoCAD/Civil 3D 2023.   This seems to be a long standing issue with all recent versions.
