Exporting CLEAN images from a DWG to a WORD document ?

Hi !

My name is Greg, I teach metal working in Geneva, Switzerland.

As a teacher and I often need to export to Word documents and other formats some drawings I make on Autocad.

Usually some little drawings, no big things.

Stuff like that:

Is it possible to export them as clean as they are when printed and with the correct lines thicknesses ?

The best way I've used sionce now is to print them in PDF and make a capture of the PFD then paste it in the Word document but the quality is not 100%...

A screenshot always has only the resolution you have on your display, but not more.

The option to go through PDF is ok, but then import the PDF in the other software instead of using screenshots (screenshots can be done in AutoCAD too).

In general a good idea, but has troubles with lineweights.

Iv'e had good luck printing from CAD to a PDF.  Then saving the PDF to jpg with a higher resolution (600 dpi or even 1200 dpi).  Bring the jpg into word.

Can you please show us what you mean by "not clean"?

What is "not clean" when you simply copy and paste some geometry from AutoCAD to MS-Word?

In AutoCAD - on your layout tab go to "Page Setup Manager" and select "Modify" and select "Display plot styles" in the page setup.

That is a one time setup that you can save.

Copy link the layout from AutoCAD 

Paste Special into Word

you have a few optiions (autocad object, windows meta file, bitmap)

Simple and clean (all fonts and lines come in crisp).

I just installed english language on my ACAD to follow your steps properly.

But...

I which tab must I be to do that ?   Model or Layout ?

In Model tab its an errror message when clicking "modify"

In Layout tab it's working and I think I need to choose the Présentation line ? 

But what to do after that in the new window ?  I don't want to print...

Sorry but I'm lost with it !

Hi Alfred,

If I simply copy (clipboard) a draw and paste it in MS Word the result is a coloured (layers) draw without respecting the line thicknesses.

What I need is a draw in black and white with the right line thicknesses, exactly like it would be if I print it..!

1 ) are you printing to PDF with "Autocad PDF" or "DWG to PDF" ?

2) are you exporting to .jpg with "PDF Creator ?" or something else ?

1. DWG to PDF

2. ADOBE Acrobat Pro.  File>Saveas.  Select jpg under the "Save" as type pulldown at bottom. Then the settings tab will allow you to increase dpi if desired.

I would use the layout tab.

looks like you are on the right track.  You selected display plot styles. Hit ok - your Presentation layout will be setup to look like the output print (colors and linewidths).

From the presentation layout - make sure your view area is what you want.  Do a copy link from the edit pulldown (in AutoCAD).

Paste into word. Paste special will give you a few options - see which one works best for you.

Crop in word as (if) needed.

That's it.

Here (attached) is my result using the DWG to PDF > PDF to JPG method.  So fast and super clean.  The Copy directly to Word method i used looks just as good.  Plot styles are used.

OK.

So the best and fastest way I used is to go in the Layout tab:

- open the "Page Setup Manger"

- select the "Display Plot Styles"

- Print my image with DWG to PDF with using the highest output resolution in the PDF options (4800x4800 ppp)

- make a sreen copy of the result at a 100% scale

- pasting this normally in my Word file

The result is almost prefect, with the right line thicknesses when printing it physically..!

Have you tried using the PublishToWeb JPG.pc3 plotter? You will get a .jpg instead of a .pdf which you can insert directly into your word document. There are fewer steps to take and you don't have to go through the hassle of using screenshots.

I typically create an EPS printer from AutoCAD and then Plot from AutoCAD to this printer and then Insert the EPS file into Word.

The quality on the screen looks good and when printed from Word the output looks even better.

Follow the instructions in the attached Word document and give it a try. I've included the sample dwg, eps and Word documents for you to check out.

I've transferred many line drawings from AutoCAD to Word and for the best "clean"  results I want a vector, not raster, image (no jpgs, pdfs, gifs, tiffs or pngs please).  To accomplish this I use the following process that yields a high quality image in which I can adjust line weights in Word and scale the image without distortion.  It also yields a low overhead (small Word file size).  The disadvantages are that text (from AutoCAD) is now vectorized (not a clean as a TT font) and the process is multistep.

Here's the process.

In AutoCAD

1. In options, set the Rendered object smoothness to 2 or higher (default is 0.5)
2. Set visualstyle to 2D Wireframe.
3. If you want to remove hidden lines from a 3D model set dispsilh = 1 and then give hide command.
4. Select lines you want to transfer then give Ctrl-C to copy them to the clipboard.

In Word

1. Do a Paste Special -  and chose Picture (Windows Metafile) to a blank page (you can scale and position later as well as specify Wrap Text preferences).
2. Right-click the graphic and chose Group  then Ungroup (you may need to do this more than once).
3. Select the lines and change the color to black (if necessary) and the weigh to 0.75pt.
4. Regroup the geometry and scale as desired.
