export with texture

hello,

i am trying to export a simple file with a 3D block from autocad to CityGML with the custom material texture i put on it.

whenever i export it and then view it in fme data inspector i can see the block but it has the standard grey color.

when i click on one of the sides of the block i can see the feature data.

the feature data with the attributes from autocad says the name i gave the material but it won't show it on the model.

so my questions are:

is it possible to export it with the material on it and how do i do this

The textures that you apply in the material manager are only visual.  They are image swatches applied over the solids or surfaces.

I wish this weren't so but AutoCAD is not nearly powerful enough to manage complex textures.

I have manually created knurls and other consistent objects to apply to surfaces/solids but the files can get very complex very quickly, with so much manually created and placed data.

Inventor (also SolidWorks) applies visual textures (termed texture or surface mapping) but there are addins to generate very simple but true textures for Inventor.  Even screw thread forms are only visual for "naked" Inventor.  I have to use an addin (CoolOrange) to get actual threads to apply on cylindrical solids in Inventor.  That makes the mass and solid form true and 3D printable when exported.

I'm certain that this is not want you wanted to find out but at least you have an answer.

There are a great many surface generator apps on the market due to the rise in 3D printing so get looking around that community for best recommendations.

Much Luck,

Blaine
