DXF File far too large to use - 3.2 GB

Hi there,

My apologies if this is a very minor problem or if it has been resolved previously. I have been given a very large DXF file but it is too large to open in the programs I am using and in AutoCAD it is so slow it cannot run. The file is 3-D and is 3.2 GB in size. Is there some way to break it into sections without actually opening it?

Again, my apologies if this is simple and thank you in advance for any help.

3.2GB?!!!!! What was the software used to create this DXF file? What is the size of the parent file from which this DXF was created?

Why DWF? and why not use DWG?

@S.Faris It is rather large haha. I don't actually have any of that information available to me at the moment as it was sent to me from a company. It is protected data but I can say that it is the geometry of an entire mine - so think kilometres of shapes. I am inexperienced with CAD so I don't know the difference or need for the file types though it is just a single DXF file.

Accepted solution

In that case just inform the Source company to reduce the file size and sent it back. 😄

Or you need  a very powerful workstation to open the file.

NO, you cannot break it into sections without opening. A (*.DXF) file extension is a Drawing Exchange Format used and supported in various 3D modeling programs for the intended purpose of being import/export with "ease" 🙂

As painful as it sounds, you must open the file. Only then would you be able to minimize its size.

Ok, thank you 😉. I think I will need it to be broken up by someone with a computer powerful enough to open it as I do not.

Hi,

read the thread which you have joined, there are two possible solutions

1. "inform the Source company to reduce the file size and sent it back"

What means: The creator should cleanup the source data and create a new .dxf

or they should split the design to multiple .dxf files

2. Try to open the file with the most powerful workstation

and additional

If 1.) is not possible and 2.) doesn't work

3. I would try any converter you find.

And the last chance, share your file with Experts (paid or with the whole community).
