DWG files are saving as webpages with no extension

After working on a drawing and saving it, it is saved as a web page with no extension.  Even after renaming the file with the .bak extension, I cannot open the file.  I tried to (Open with) and selected AutoCad but I get a pop-up saying "Can't locate the file.  All .bak files on my computer were change to being web pages with no file extension.  I don't know what I did or how to fix it.

I had to stop here. What does this mean?

Did you use the SAVETOWEBMOBILE command?

If so, the partner command to this is OPENFROMWEBMOBILE.

Please paste in some screenshots so we can see what's going on. Thanks.

I've never heard of the SAVETOWEBMOBILE command, never knew it existed.  No, I did not use it.  I am trying to figure out how to take a screen shot.

first of all make sure you can see all your file extensions:

The icon at the front of the file is the web icon.

That does not have to do with the file extension. Again follow my instructions in my previous reply.

To correct the icons to show correctly for AutoCAD drawings in Windows Explorer follow these instructions:

I followed the instructions.  I get a pop-up AutoCad message saying the file cannot be found.  Make sure a disk is inserted or that the file exists.  I followed the instructions three times.  Same result.  I did not do the "Reset file association (option 1) as I am always leary about deleting files.  I have been using Acad for years.  Yesterday all was normal.  This problem happened today.  I don't know what I might have done.

What is your Windows Operating System: Win10 or Win11?

Are you still able to launch AutoCAD by double clicking on the AutoCAD shortcut on the Desktop or Start menu?

If you can start AutoCAD after opening a new blank drawing enter the ABOUT command, when the About window appears use the keyboard and hit the Alt+Print Scrn combination to capture the current screen to the clip board.

Then respond to this message and on the keyboard hit the Ctrl+V combination to paste the screen capture here.

Wow, that's really a very old version of AutoCAD. I'm surprise it still runs.

Were you successful in changing Windows Explorer so you now see the file extensions by following these instructions:

first of all make sure you can see all your file extensions:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PoTah9YBG2Y

https://vtcri.kayako.com/article/296-view-file-extensions-windows-10

FYI, It doesn't matter what icons you see in Windows Explorer you should still be able to launch AutoCAD by clicking on the Windows Start button (lower left hand corner) and then scroll to where you see AutoCAD 2000i and expand that menu to launch AutoCAD:

paullimapa_0-1705018999694.png

In AutoCAD start a blank drawing enter the following command:

FILEDIA

1

Then enter command:

OPEN

Now you should see a window open for you to look for your drawings in the F: drive to open the dwg from here

Yep, and I'm a really old guy; but I still work.  Although I am on Rev II, I had open heart surgery in June.  If I still work why shouldn't AutoCAD?

I did watch the YouTube video on adding and deleting file extensions. Low and behold mine was turned off.  I checked the box then went to the drawing I have been having trouble with, renamed the file along with the extension and;

VIOLA, it opened.  I then went back to some old files (like me), and they too opened.  I am breathing so much easier and I have you to thank.  Thank you very much young man.  Who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

My bewilderment now is how did that setting get changed?  I do recall going to that screen and changing the view from "small icons" to "list" so that these old eyes could see what I wanted to see better.  My cursor might have been floating around and I hit a button to cause the change.  I don't know.  But for now I think I am back in business.

Thank you again for your time and patience.  Most people would probably like to sweep me under a rug but you have restored my faith in humanity.  I can't thank you enough.  If you ever need an old dog for any reason, I'm at your beckoning call.

Regards,

Bob

The icon at the front of the file is the web icon.

Instead of continuously confusing yourself all day long, ignore silly little icon changes, check this box to do what it says, and be more informed by knowing exactly what that file it all the time

Little icons means nothing at all when it comes to actual file types, you have a program that decided to change icons for you, you can always change them back whenever you want anytime for that last 30+years now, here is how to do that

win11 https://www.thewindowsclub.com/how-to-change-file-and-folder-icons-in-windows-10#:~:text=To%20custom...

Win10 / 8 / 7 https://www.thewindowsclub.com/how-to-change-file-and-folder-icons-in-windows-10#:~:text=For%20custo...

You can also just watch this column for information

Thank you for the response.  I did solve my problem with help from another person who also responded.  But, I will follow the link you gave me anyway.  It just might add to educating me.  It never hurts to learn.

I see that you are in Dallas.  My son lives in Frisco.  We were just there for Thanksgiving and again for Christmas.  He took us to the Cowboy Club Christmas Eve to watch the Cowboys game on a big screen TV that covered an entire wall.  We felt like we were sitting in the middle of the huddle.

Again, thank you for the help.  It has restored my belief that there are good people out there that can be trusted.  By the way, a big part of my problems occur because my hard drive (head) is full.  I guess I need to find an auxiliary hard drive to plug in.  Where would I plug it???  Don't answer that!!!  I tell people that at my age, memory is the second thing that goes.  Thank you again.

I had a hard time sleeping last night thinking about AutoCAD.  I have my own licensed copy of AutoCAD; had their subscription for many years.  I let it drop in 2014 as I retired and couldn't justify the cost of keeping it going.  Even though I am an old coot I enjoy staying busy and doing things that might come my way.  As for as engineering projects, they have been few and far between.  I have drawn a few house plans for people I know and did work for back in the day.  I can't sign or seal drawings so asking a registered architect to review the plans and sign them has worked.  Comments I get are that my drawings are very accurate and detailed.  I used to say too much detail is not a bad thing as long as it is accurate.  Some architects have the mind set that leave out the details; let the construction people figure it out.  Adding detail opens the door for liability.  Well, that's not how I think.  I have always stood behind my work.

Anyway, I have been thinking of renewing my subscription and trying my hand at 3D.  I think it would be fun as well as educational.  I don't expect to use it professionally or to earn a living, just to get back into it to remove the rust that has built up.  I went to the AUTODESK web site and see several options.  Can you offer any recommendations?  I certainly don't have a bottomless bank account but I am not a fan of being a cheap skate either.  Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

First of all you’ll have to increase your local hard drive because programs like AutoCAD prefers to be installed on c: drive. Then you can actually download a 30 day trial version of AutoCAD LT to see if that lower cost subscription version is good enough for doing your 2d drafting work.

My hard drive is 280GB.  That is where I have my AutoCAD 2000i program loaded, along with the other programs I use; i.e. MS Office, Word Perfect, Adobe Acrobat and a few other much smaller programs.  I am not a gamer so I don't have any of those programs.  My daughter is a school teacher, do you know if they offer a student version of the full platform?

Since you are not your daughter so you don’t qualify and with education version you can’t use it to do professional work

read up on requirements here
