Drawing file size too large

Hi,

I'm using Autocad 2010, One my client drawing file size is over 50MB. When I trying to open that file it takes more than 20 minutes.

After that I have tried Wblock,DXFout & dgnpurge commands the entire Autocad window is not responding. I tried to save that drawing after purged some error message shown (see attached).

Is any option to reduce file size without open it?

Anyone please help.

Thanks
Bala

Short answer -- No.

slightly longer -- judging from the dialog you posted, that drawing was created using a vertical or 3rd party application that creates custom objects.  If your client can export that to vanilla autocad, that may reduce the size significantly.

Otherwise, I'd suggest investing in an SSD hard drive, & maxing out the RAM in your PC

Thanks for your response.

If any seperate software like drawing converter (DWG TrueView) for the reduce file size may useful.

Thanks

Hi,

>> If any seperate software like drawing converter (DWG TrueView) for the reduce file size may useful.

The dialog tells us, that you have big objects in the drawing.

You wrote that you have done WBLOCK and all the other stuff to get rid from unused objects.

.., so what should any software do to reduce the file size? Delete objects is the only chance now.

Is it possible to save the drawings as 2010 format or newer?  If you don't need to maintain compatibility for older versions, disable Maintain Drawing Size Compatibility in Options > Open and Save

You may find some additonal help here

Maintain Compatibility with Large objects

the objects in this drawing are approaching the size limits

Hello

As I said here :

http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/autocad-2004-2005-2006/insufficient-memory-to-open-drawing/m-p/5483696...

There is ALMOST no limit to the size of a standard DWG you can use ...

My test GIS/Maps DWG (280 Mb) contains about : 528000 blocks, 88000 plines, 80000 texts, 34000 mpolygons, 230000 hatches

And the MAIN problem with this kind of DWG, is the HATCHES !

Because unfortunately ACAD doesn't manage well/correctly too many hatches so when I work, almost all the times the HATCH layers are frozen !!

---> So if you are careful with hatches, no specific probelm ...

Thanks

Hi,

What means "more" hatches?

And imho the message you have shown in your initial post has nothing to do with hatches, there are some objects like Civil 3D surface (or by other vertical product created objects) or complex meshed objects or solid objects. My suggestion would be to first find that objects and see how they can be handled either with less memory consumtion or maybe as external files that are only referenced when needed, ...

Now we are just guessing.

Hello Alfred

YES when using large 3D DWG and especially with MANY AEC objects (coming from vertical products like CIVIL, AA, MEP, etc)

you must have many layer and XREFs to be able to freeze layers and to unload XREF ...

It's ONLY with a lot of layers frozen and unloaded XREFs that you can manage large 2D/3D DWG when the memory is the MAIN problem !

Your suggestion is excellent :
