Drawing file is not valid – Common issues & quick check tips

Many users keep encountering the error: Drawing file is not valid This usually happens after sudden software crashes, power loss, file transfer issues, or version conflicts. The built-in RECOVER and AUDIT commands often can’t fix serious damage. Over the years, I’ve dealt with many such corrupted DWG cases. Some files can be restored completely, while some are too badly damaged to recover. If you’re facing this error and have tried all common methods without success, feel free to share your situation. I can share my experience based on different damage types.

@DeepGuardCAD Most of us just look for, rename and use the "autosave" DWG or BAK files found in our Windows Login Temp folders if the primary DWG file and it's adjacent BAK file are unusable due to an event.

Just giving up because RECOVER or AUDIT did not work is hardly good advice IMHO.

Something I have used to recover a wounded DWG file is to start a new, blank drawing and INSERT the damaged file into it.

Hi, 

Recently my Autocad LT 2026 is giving this message (Drawing file is not valid) when I try to open .dwg files that are a few years old. This only happens when I try to open them using the 'Open' command in Autocad. When I double click the same file in windows explorer the files opens without problems...

Why is this?

@joost_010 Where do you store your files exactly? Explain in detail. Cloud storage for example? Server you are hard-wired and connected to? VPN to a remote PC or server?

And by chance are you 100% positive you are accessing the same files on the same drives in the same folders with both methods?

I'm using Dropbox for storage.

I'm browsing to the same folders / files, either via 'Open' command in Autocad UI or the Windows explorer window. As far as I know I am trying to access the same files. 

As a test I tried opening files on my NAS, that works just fine. [Both options open the files without hesitation]. Hmm, has it something to do with Dropbox settings?

I run into issues using DropBox as a working directory/folder all the time, and not just with AutoCAD.

My solution: Work from hard drive, then copy the final to DropBox

Most likely your Dropbox client and/or sync timed out on you. Limitations of cloud services is discussed in HELP in 2026 (and older versions), start here at the highlighted section
