DOCK INLINE WITH STATUS BAR funky behavior

Anonymous

In AutoCAD 2016 when I choose "Dock Inline with Status Bar" by right clicking on a model or layout tab it doesn't stay docked.

Here's what happens. I have my AutoCAD window maximized.  I choose "Dock Inline with Status Bar" from a model or layout tab.  As soon as I use the Pan or Move command the model and layout tabs undock and raise above the status bar, even though the AutoCAD window is maximized.  I am only using one model and one layout tab.

Here's the funky thing: if my AutoCAd window is not maximized it stays docked with the status bar.

How do I make it persistent?

Did you tried this:

  • Enter the command variable STATUSBARAUTOWRAP and set it to Off or 0 (zero).

I'm working with AutoCAD 2020 (not LT) and this is working

Two questions:

1) Why would AutoCAD have this function and make it hidden so painfully?

2) Are you an angel sent from heaven?

Seriously though, thank you so much. This has been a gigantic thorn in my side for years.

John does another Job now.

AutoCAD is the program, AutoDESK programmed it and thus hidden it.

Why was it created?
Probably because it was a very, very good idea! Unfortunately with weaknesses in practice.

Why so hidden?
The function is undocumented, so it should not be possible for the user to change it.
I suspect the following: I think that all developers either have great large screens, or very small screens,
so the developers don't have the problem.
Either they always saw one line, or always two lines,
something didn't keep jumping - they thought it works like that for everyone ..
So there was no reason to be able to change it.
Or it was just forgotten to document and has not been supplemented to this day,
but that this variable is not present in all products speaks against it.

In addition, the developers do not really work with the program and therefore see it as less of a problem.
No high coordinate areas, etc.

@Anonymous

because my posted link is broken: In LT you can force the TAB above the statusbar,

that's only way in LT.

(or you try to set AutoCAD LT not in fullsize, just stretch the program window so huge as possible.

Looks like fullsize, but isn't. Somebody said it works to, but right-click on model-tab and "Above status bar" sounds cleaner as solution.

I have this same problem. I'm assuming that in seven years it just hasn't been fixed? "STATUSBARAUTOWRAP" isn't an option in Autocad LT, and everything else proposed here is an awkward workaround for what seems like a pretty blatant bug in the software. Is everybody just used to their workarounds?

Just right-click over a tab in any AutoCAD variant, including LT, then uncheck

That fixes it until I switch tabs, and it changes itself right back. It's not even consistent across all tabs; some have this issue and some just stay in-line, so as I switch between tabs my dock jumps up and down randomly. After I tell a tab to dock in-line, what then tells it to dock above? Whatever that is, it seems to be what I'm constantly fighting against.

I was able to make the changes permanent by switching from AutoCAD Mechanical to AutoCAD vanilla. The problem would come back every time I reopened the software, making me rather annoyed that it was called SOLVED as I considered it more of a workaround...

But, once I started 2018 AutoCAD Vanilla instead of 2018 AutoCAD Mechanical, the solution was truly a cure and not just a treatment.

Bumping this because it worked for me in the past, but stopped working recently. When I right-clicked the tabs, the "dock inline with taskbar" option was greyed out. I tried all the options above including turning off every option in the taskbar, but no luck.

Rather than turn off all the options in the taskbar, I turned STATUSBARAUTOWRAP to ON, then the option to move tabs was available again, then turned STATUSBARAUTOWRAP to OFF again. For some reason this will allow you to access the setting and fix it in place.

Also, a quick fix is to set your units to a smaller amount behind the decimal. If you really need 4 decimal places resolution, by all means leave it at that but shortening the coordinate values helps with the taskbar size.
