Crashes - Drafting Cver Point Clouds In Rotated View And UCS With F8 Ortho On

I have a problem with jittery and crashey drawings when I specifically drafting lines orthogonally over point clouds and UCS’ that have been rotated.

To explain more precisely. I am CAD technician who drafts elevations of buildings from scan point clouds. The data (the scan point cloud) comes from site into Recap and out again as an .rcs file and is inserted into AutoCAD 2018. As the default view is birds eye this is no good so I have to set up a view along the elevation I wish to draft and the rotate the view with the cube so I am looking at it in ‘Front’ view.

When it is in front view I need to rotate the UCS axis again as Z is pointing up (where Y should be), X is pointing right (where it should be) and Y is towards/backwards (where Z should be). I rectify this by rotating the X axis by 270 and voila I can the draft away. My problem occurs when I draft with the F8 Ortho lock on. It does not like it all and when I click line and start to draw up or down the background drawing will flash, distort and sometimes crash altogether. At the moment I am struggling without F8 on but its not producing the neatest drawings.

I cant really do a photo, but I could do a video and upload to you tube.

What is going wrong?

Hi @kperrina,

I see that you are visiting as a new member to the AutoCAD forum. Welcome to the Autodesk Community!

Is it possible to create Screencast video?  If you could also share your drawing and point cloud data from a Cloud storage location with me I would like to see if I can duplicate this action.

Is your AutoCAD 2018 fully up-to-date from your Autodesk Desktop App or from your account page?

Please select the Accept as Solution button if my post solves your issue or answers your question.

Hi John,

Thanks for your reply.

I am up to date with AutoCAD.

I have just turned my PC on to do the video and it's not doing it anymore.
Typical!! Now I think about it though, its something that starts to happen
after a while. Perhaps its my graphics card getting hot and struggling?

My graphics card spec is:

Radeon Software Version - 18.7.1

Radeon Software Edition - Adrenalin

Graphics Chipset - AMD Radeon R9 200 Series

Memory Size - 3072 MB

Memory Type - GDDR5

Core Clock - 1050 MHz

Windows Version - Windows 7 (Service Pack 1) (64 bit)

System Memory - 32 GB

CPU Type - AMD FX(tm)-8350 Eight-Core Processor

I will need to work on the drawing again next week so hopefully it will
start to do it again and I will record what I am doing. It's a very
annoying issue. I am only on a trial of Recap (what I use to create the rcs
file). I used to use another plugin to load my point clouds into AutoCAD
but wanted to try rcs files options, so far its great except this issue.

Kind regards,
Kev
