COPY TO CLIPBOARD FAILED!!

Can someone please help me figure out why I cannot copy clip from one drawing to another in AutoCAD Architecture 2014??

Some drawings it works but mostly it does not.

Thank you

Scott

Hi,

first question, maybe the most important one: what have you tried yet?

There are a lot of threads about copy/paste issues (>>>click<<<) ... it does not make sense to start every time from scratch.

Please let us know

a) what exactly means "cannot copy clip from one drawing to another" from your words (AutoCAD crashes,

AutoCAD reports errors, the menu is missing for paste, resulting geometry wrong scaled (to small/to large),  ...)

b) what have you tried yet, e.g. WBLOCK and INSERT

c) if possible upload two drawings, one with the source geometry and another one where the pasting fails

As you are working with Architecture you should know, that your problem might depend on Architecture environment, so it might not be solvable in this forum here handling just plan AutoCAD questions.

well I havent tried anything yet because I havent really found a logical solution, all solutions seem to be downloading other programs and running them and Im just not sure my company would like me to do that.  all i need to do is download something and it screw up my computer.  I got into a drawing hit ctrl + C to copy , click what I want to copy and the message " copy to clipboard failed".  autocad does not crash it just wont let me copy clip.  I hit the F2 button to see if any message as to why it wont and nothing.  although i did try and insert the drawing into a totally clean drawing and explode it and it worked but it also takes alot of my text and like bubble leaders and callout tags and kinda bunches them all up into a big mess so i cant save it and use that drawing later.

If INSERT fixed the problem with the file, then perhaps the file is damaged: RECOVER command to fix it, then QSAVE and try again.

Looks like the file source is your problem my friend: isolate and try to find out more. Or post one of these problem files here for others to review.

Hi,

you should not download and install anything. Most ideas are like

a) "use other methods like WBLOCK and INSERT" (WBLOCK with the geometry you like to copy creates a new DWG-file and that file can be inserted into the destination drawing) ... or

b) verify that there are no proxy objects from any applications based on AutoCAD

c) run _AUDIT or open the drawing with command _RECOVER to see if the database is ok or has issues

d) if a mass of elements can't be copied then try piece by piece ... until you get the message you mentioned ==> now you know what element is the source of the problem.

... and a lot more.

>> I havent tried anything yet

Well, but if you search using Google with your message (>>>click<<<) might bring you to a solution faster than anyone here can answer.

At least we all don't know "this one" solution to that, at least because we don't have your drawings.

I know what WBLOCK is and I havent tried that yet.

i just a recover on that specific drawing and it said it found 1 and fixed 1 error but still didnt work when i tried to copy clip

ive tried purging and auditing and nothing.

what are proxy objects and how to check for them?

in this case im not trying to copy a whole floor plan im just trying to copy clip one wall.

You need to:
1. Post in the ARCHITECTURE forum, it's your product. We might give you the wrong info http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/AutoCAD-Architecture-General/bd-p/248
2. You need to share a file there.
3. Proxy Objects are core to ARCH, so don't go destroying anything.

how do I share a file there?  I thought I needed to post in this forum, (this is the AutoCAD Architecture 2014 forum right??

I dont even know what a proxy is so I wont be destroying anything..LOL

Hi,

>> I know what WBLOCK is and I havent tried that yet

I know that it's not my best day today but: if you get a suggestion why do you ignore it?

>> what are proxy objects and how to check for them?

Proxy-objects are application-specific objects, not known by AutoCAD or the current active vertical product (in your case Architecture).

So e.g. a WALL object is not known to plain AutoCAD. So if you open a drawing created by Architecture with a wall in it exactly this wall-object is a proxy for AutoCAD.

You can see that in the property window when you select an entity.

i just tried to WBLOCK and select the objects, i selected everything in the drawing and this is the error message i got. see attachment below.

I also tried WBLOCK by saying entire drawing, not selecting anything, and it made the WBLOCk.  I inserted it in a drawing that the copy clip works and still nothing.

Hi,

ok, the message tells you what happend. In your drawing are objects that were created by an application outside of your current environment. And as objects of type "unknown" (=proxy-objects) can't be copied you can't copy/paste into another drawing.

Why can't proxy-objects be copied ... well as your current application does not know what that is, and so it does not now what might be necessary to copy it (e.g. does it need new ID's or something like that).

Start your AutoCAD Architecture, turn the sysvar PROXYNOTICE to 1, then open that drawing ==> you'll get a dialog with the message(s), what proxy objects are in this drawing, and what applications created them. That's the point to continue then.

same way you attached that JPEG file you can attach the offending DWG file here or there for review.

What AutoCAD variant and year-version did your file come from? Are you by chance saving down from 2013-2014 format to something much lower?

Same thing just happened to me.  I rebooted my machine to clear the memory and clipboard and it all worked fine after that.

Scott,

I'm aware that you haven't mentioned file size; however, you may want to review the following article:

AutoCAD DWG files unexpectedly increase in file size

Copy and Paste functions were one of many symptons caused by this issue and resolved with the hotfix. HTH.

Cheers,

Volker
