Content exists but not visible

I worked on this drawing a month ago and need to make some edits now, but both the model space and paper space are blank (in the screenshot a border in paper space is seen but when I REGEN it disappears). When I plot, everything that I had drawn prints perfectly (put doesnt show in the preview).

I've tried all the normal things like making sure layer visibility is on, REGENALL, Zoom extents, and whatnot. Suggestions?

Hi,

Please:

  • thaw all layers
  • turn on all layers
  • make sure no layer and no objects do have true-color black assigned (or try to change to white background)
  • turn off hardware acceleration
  • when pressing <CTRL><A> in modelspace ... how many objects are selected (shows the property window)

If all fails please upload the dwg-file, that gives us options to work instead of guess 😉

Have you checked for the XREFdisplay?

Options -> Display -> Fade control -> Xref display. Set the Value between 0 and 70 (not at 90 max)

The higher the less you see of your Xref.

Or are they not only Xref lines but 'everything'

Than you could try a 'Audit' (while the drawing is open)

An other thing is to check the visibilty for Proxy objects.

Options -> Open and Save -> Set 'Show proxy graphics'

This will only be visiable after restarting AutoCAD/Drawing.

CTRL+A selected outlines but the property window says no selection. When I do SELECT_ALL it says "37635 found, 862 were not in current space"

AUDIT found and fixed 5 errors, erased nothing, and nothing else happened. Still showing no content.

Can't save to .dxf

I'd also prefer not to upload the CAD file as it is work sensitive

What happens when you  Xref or Insert this file into a new file?

Does it show anything?

Didn't think of that! When I XREF'd it into a new drawing everything I had previously drawn shows up

I 'm able to edit the reference in the new file so I can make the necessary changes that way.

I do need to include these layouts in a sheet set though, and I still can't see anything in the original file to place callouts from the sheet set.

Glad to help.

In these cases I most often do a CTRL+A or a select-all. then WBLOCK all the selected.

Delete everything in the drawing. Purge all (several times).

Then re-insert the newly created block.

In this way you retain all drawing settings like layouts/page setups. But your contents is 'clean'

I did what you said in the original file to see if that did anything. I placed the new block and it showed up (see screen shot) but when I switched to my layout to adjust the placement in the viewport, nothing showed up like before, and when I went back to model space the block disappeared as well.

I've uploaded the file because its not terribly sensitive and I want to get the original problem fixed.

I have no time for an analysis, but if it helps you - see attachment.
Opened in 2016, problem present
Opened in 2013, AUDIT / yes (5 errors), saveas

This shouldn't occur with AutoCAD but right clicking on the display area and choosing isolate -> end isolation and then zooming extents will get everything back. It could have been that one or more of the 5 audit errors might've caused the objects not to end their isolation automatically on drawing open.

It is possible that someone used a program to deliberately switch the visibility of objects off.

Any idea why it keeps disappearing and I need to End Isolation every time I go from paper to model space?

look at dbroad an my posting:

"It could have been that one or more of the 5 audit errors might've caused the objects not to end their isolation automatically on drawing open."

Open your file, unisolate the Objecs, rund AUDIT(yes), save file.

No problems with the new saved file.

@Anonymous  Very good question. I suggest.

  1. On opening, remove the association with the sheet set if asked.
  2. Ignore unresolved references if asked.
  3. Switch to model tab.
  4. Audit the drawing. Choose to fix errors.
  5. After audit, do a complete purge of unreferenced items, purging nested items.
  6. Right click and unisolate.
  7. Zoom extents and delete the wild xx block at the lower right corner of the drawing.
  8. Zoom extents again.
  9. Save as another drawing.
  10. Close and reopen the drawing.  Everything left should work correctly.

This is a record of the audit which shows lots of issues with self-referencing blocks.  Got to be careful with block naming:

Fix any errors detected? [Yes/No] <N>: y
