HI srsravi9,

When you see "circular reference", it means that the drawing likely references another drawing that already references the first drawing.

This will produce errors and odd results so it should be avoided.

I am assembling a series of frames using company supplied beam profiles with variable length settings I have been saving each beam as its own part file.

Now as I construct an additional frame I am unable to constrain the member parts and am getting a system error notice. I have followed the acad trouble shoot to the circular ref info and the subsequent directions to create substitutes but the dialog box doesn't populate with any files to create a copy So I am stuck with this situation they say to avoid. I have responded for years asking for more acad visual examples and less written text in their manual for online problem solving. Inventor seem rife with bugs in the software. Never have this problem with Creo, solidworks s-edge. etc.

To get rid of circular references make all xref's OVERLAY, not ATTACH.

And you need to do it ALL existing files.

To change XREF's already ATTACH'ed to OVERLAY in the External References palette, select the xref in the list, then select the word ATTACH in the description then the arrow down and select OVERLAY:

Or better use CLASSICXREF and just dbl-click on the word ATTACH and it will toggle to OVERLAY:
