I realize this may be odd, but as a Sketchup guy too, I am very used to being able to select one object at a time and then when selecting more, (much like in AutoCAD) by holding down the Ctrl key to grab more. In other words, I want to click an object and then simply click on the next de-selecting the first. I am driven NUTS by having to hit Esc so much. I can select many objects on purpose so many other ways I don't need clicking around the model automatically selecting objects.
Thanks. (NEWBE)

to select click use CTRL, to de-select use SHIFT. you can also use _layiso to isolate current object. thanks
Try to change the PICKADD system variable.
Type PICKADD, enter. Type 0, enter.
Now when you select the next object, the previous selection is cleared.
If you want to add an object to the current selection set, hold SHIFT when selecting.
Also, hold SHIFT to deselect an object from the current selection set.
