cant click on object within object

Hello, I am a student building an elevator for my project. I am trying to make a groove in a wheel by sweeping a tall  U shape through a circular path in the wheel then subtracting. however, when I try to add the lines going up from the small circle I made (used for the bottom of the U shape), it highlights the rim of the wheel, and that means that i cannot snap to or highlight the small circle inside the wheel. I have tried troubleshooting the problem by looking for the answer online and trying to toggle through what my pointer is touching (I forget what thats called). None of this worked for me. I also tried messing with the options.  Does anyone know how I can accomplish this goal?

Hi There and welcome to the Community.

So there is a bunch of different options. You can start by trying Selection Cycling. Please see the attached picture: Selection Cycling

1. Go to the 3 lines at the bottom right of your screen

2. Select "Selection Cycling" in the list.

3. Make sure the selection Cycling in turned ON (If its blue its on)

4. Now when you hover over the edge you will see the following symbol

5. When you "Click" the following box will appear allowing you to cycle though the different options.

The second option that you have is Selection Filtering. Using step 1 and 2 in the previous option select "Selection Filtering"

Have a look at the attached picture" Selection Filtering"

You have the option to choose what you want to select,"Faces, edges, vertexes ect." Make sure it is turned ON in order to filter what you want to see.

Please let me know if this helps

If this post solved your issue please mark as solved and Kudos are always welcome 😃

Dynamic UCS can prevent you from selecting objects behind a face/surface. Try disabling it (if it's not already) using the Statusbar icon or F6.

Maybe try 2DWireframe if you're currently using a 3D Visual Style.

Attach your drawing here if none of the suggestions in this topic solve your problem.

two other options

put the rim and groove on separate layers.  turn off the rimlayer while you draw the groove cross section

forget the substraction unless it a required part of the exercise  draw the rim cross section and sweep it to a solid
