.bak files sorting before .dwg files..

Hi,

This annonying problem cropped up before in 2014.. For some reason the .bak files appear before the .dwg files. Sorting by Type is a short term solution, but then the dwg files are reversed from last alphabetical to first, and then the .bak files.

The solution that worked before was to right-click on an AutoCAD file, and use "open with" and then select AutoCAD 2014. However, that is not working this time with AutoCAD 2016

Another solution was to go into Windows Explorer options and select "Sort by Groups", but I don't see that option.

Is there some other solution? The only thing that I can think of doing is to use MOVEBAK, however other people in the office might not find the folder or understand that it has been moved.

Sort of odd that there isn't better coordination between AutoCAD and Windows Explorer.. Is there another Explorer type system I can download to view files that has better control.

thanks!

Through blundering thru how to fix this issue. I seem to have found a solution. It will be up to a smarter person than me to find a elegant way to describe it. First, set windows 10 to "hide extensions of known filetypes" (open file explorer, view, options, view, click it in the list), next, and this is the part that works like black magic, is add 'file extension' to the sorting tabs. Than it seems my files are sorted in order, name, date, type, size extension. It may not look right when you press some obscure combination of sorting options, but when I than go up a file and back, it magically sorts correctly, files, DWGs, BAKs. If someone could come and figure out how this works, or give me a way to add the file extension tab to all files without doing it manually on each file, I would appreciate it.

I just solved this by changing the default program .dwg files open with. It was set to "AutoCAD Application" which made the file type list as "DWG File" which, as stated earlier, is alphabetically after "BAK File".

Changing the application that a .dwg file will always open with from "AutoCAD Application" to "AutoCAD DWG Launcher" changes the listed file type to "AutoCAD Drawing" which, as stated earlier, is alphabetically before "BAK File". The files still open in the latest flavor of AutoCAD, nothing else seems to have changed.

Nice catch LKJones, I looked at my settings and this is what I had done to solve the problem, but because I was in a hurry I did a crappy job of explaining it by posting the wrong app, and probably caused more confusion than help.

Just to note, when you select a type, all the other file types are hidden.

Hi @autocadding

Just to follow up using the arrow located in the "Type" column in Windows Explorer helped create a workaround for organizing your files, right?

Yeah man I miss the way it functioned in Windows 7 and prior, with Windows 10 the bak files show up on top even when sorting by type. Only workaround is the "grouping" by type or the new check mark option next to the type column. Go figure 😕

If this is a Windows Explorer "sorting' issue, I use sorting by TYPE in there in Win7 and R2016 today (back to R12 on this PC) and I get the BAKs on the bottom.

I assume you are using Windows 10. I am having the same issue using Windows 10 on this new machine. My firm was using exclusively Windows 7.

I ran into the same issue. The answer is to associate BOTH .DWG files and .BAK files with the AutoCAD Launcher, not just .BAK files.

By default in Windows 10, .BAK files have the default program to "Go to store to find". Change that to AutoCAD Launcher.

By default in Windows 10, .DWG files have the default program "AutoCAD 20XX". Change that to AutoCAD Launcher.

This will fix your issue.

Oh, ALSO so it works on all folders, click folder options, go to view and then in the upper part of the window, click APPLY TO ALL FOLDERS.

Hope this helps.

Actually the arrow on top of the word type works-clicking on it reverses the order!!

Hello all, if I go to properties for a .dwg file and change the file type to associate with "AutoCAD DWG Launcher" instead of "AutoCAD Application", functionality does not change, but the Type is now listed as "AutoCAD File" instead of "DWG File", meaning it sorts above .bak files in the file explorer.  Hopefully the same for you.

Fixed for me when I changed the .dwg to open with the AUTOCAD LAUNCHER instead of the standard AUTOCAD program default.

File 'type' needs to be AutoCAD rather than DWG File.

https://www.landfx.com/kb/autocad-fxcad/files/item/2658-cad-default.html

if link does not work: right click .dwg file --> open with --> choose another app --> AutoCAD Drawing Launcher (check 'always use this app')

Simple fix to this annoying problem:
File Explorer>Right click a dwg file>Open with>Choose another app>Select AutoCAD DWG LAUNCHER and click the Always use this app to open .dwg files>Ok... Bam. Done!
