AutoCAD 2017 Changing Custom RGB Values

Is anyone else seeing this bug in AutoCAD 2017?

1) On the Layer Properties Manager, select a color swatch to pull up the "Select Color" prompt
2) Go to the True Color tab
3) Try to enter any RGB value, such as 150,0,0
4) After clicking Tab or OK the value is automatically changed to something else (for instance: 148,0,0).

What is going on here?

hi, i'm not sure about this. dont have yet autocad 2017 on my side. is there any available from autodesk service pack, hot fixes and updates to install to solve your issue. thanks

AutoCAD 2017 just became available this week so there aren't any updates available yet.

I have an update regarding this issue.

We made a minor change to the color handling feature in 2017, which caused this change in behavior. It is actually a fix to the way the HSL/RGB conversion works when the Color Model is set to HSL in the Select Color dialog box.

When the Color Model is set to RGB, entering the RGB value into the Color field results in the exact RGB value for the resulting True Color (no conversion necessary):

When the Color Model is set to HSL, entering the RGB value into the Color field triggers a conversion based on the HSL values (Hue, Saturation, and Luminance), and the RGB value in the Color field is adjusted based on this conversion. The Hue, Saturation, and Luminance values are accurate in the HSL color model:

To test this, you can enter the Hue, Saturation, and Luminance values into an HSL/RGB calculator like this one, and the converted RGB value will be the same as you see here.

Prior to AutoCAD 2017, the Color field was simply a direct entry for RGB values, even when the HSL Color Model was selected - it was not functioning correctly based on the selected Color Model.

We do understand that this is confusing (and perhaps a bit misleading) to end users who have been entering the RGB values into this field for years without it triggering a conversion. There is an ongoing discussion regarding whether and how to make this clearer, while still maintaining the accuracy of the HSL/RGB conversion. For instance, would it make more sense for the RGB color model to be the default, instead of HSL?

If you have any additional input regarding your experience with this feature, I encourage you to post it here, and I'll be happy to pass your comments along to the development team for consideration.

Thanks for the update.  I've never used the HSL values, but I don't really care which is the default, AS LONG AS AutoCAD permanently remembers the last setting used.  So to reiterate, when I first install the program and am presented with HSL by default, that's fine, as long as when I change the pull-down to RGB and enter those values, the next time I open the dialog I'm presented with RGB by default thereafter, even when closing and reopening the program. 

To make it clearer, you could have grayed-out text in the color field that says "Enter HSL value" or "Enter RGB value" that disappears when the user clicks in the field, similar to a web form.

Thanks for the follow up. I agree, would be best if the dialog box saved your settings, so that the tab would always open to the last one you used. These are great ideas for how to improve the experience, and I'll pass them along to the development team.

Just another clarification:  it needs to go beyond opening to the same TAB.  It needs to default to the last used pull-down option.  Otherwise it doesn't solve anything.

By the way, when they're in there tinkering with saving pull-down settings, have them fix the Find and Replace dialog too.  I've reported that issue for a number of years, where the "Find where" pull-down needs to remember the last setting used.

After having the opportunity to test this on my 2017 install, it appears it is already setup to remember the RGB setting on the pull-down menu.  Even after restarting AutoCAD, when I go to change the color, the RGB options are already showing.

So I think this particular issue is resolved for me.  I was just never aware of the bug before.  Thanks Victoria and Ron for your responses!

One more thing to be added in dialog box.

When you enter:

- a true color value in the Index Color tab

or

- a index color in True Color tab

an error message appears: "Not a valid color name or value".
Please eliminate the error message and correct this in order that if you input a color in a wrong format, the program to recognize the color and to switch to corresponding tab type automatically.

Example:

- if you enter 20 in True color and press enter the color to be index color 20

- if you enter 255,0,0 in Index Tab, the color to be true color 255,0,0
