Autocad 17 - Can not see through masked text when moving them

Just started using Autocad 17 from Autocad 14 and I'm having an issue with moving background masked mtext items around in the drawing and not being able to see through the background mask as I'm moving them like you could in Autocad 14.

When I move a masked mtext object in 17 everything is blacked out within the border of the mask, so if you are trying to move a masked text object

to sit on top of a line without masking the line, it's kind of a hit and miss operation to move the object into place without covering the line.  In Autocad 14 you could do this easily because you could see through the masking and see the objects in back so that you could place the object right where you needed to.

Does anyone know how to get this functionality back for Autocad 17 and newer versions?

Have you tried working with the DRAWORDER command?

Define "mask" please: I see from an earlier post you were using different methods.

As a general rule the problem you describe usually means your video card cannot keep up with 2017 since it's an ability here. Update your video card driver to see if that helps and post a screenshot of your GRAPHICSCONFIG command pop-up.

@pendean is right about your graphics options affecting this. Another trick is to use grips for moving / rotating masked text. That will allow you to "see through" your masking.

We have brand new high dollar computers and video cards running Autocad 17 and all machines experience this issue.

I believe it is unique to later versions of Autocad post Acad 14 or we are just missing a setvar setting or something that was

default in earlier versions of Autocad.

Create a string of mtext, give it a background mask and in this example give a large mask area that extends well beyond the text itself,

now use the move command or the copy command and select the text and move it across your drawing, everything behind the masked text as you are moving it around the screen is blocked out (black) until the text mask moves beyond it.

In Autocad 14 you could do the same steps above and as you are moving across your drawing with the masked text, you could see the objects and linework

behind the mask so that you could place the masked text exactly where it needed to be.

Is this just something that was taken away in later versions of Autocad?

I'm hoping it is just a setting or something.

Using grips to move the background masked text objects does work so that you can see through the masking as you are moving the text object around.

But why does it not work that way for the move and copy command like it did in older versions of Autocad???

Thanks Warren for noticing that it does work correctly for grip moves, appreciate that.

Post a dwg with the problem: I am unable to replicate your described issue.

FYI, high-dollar computer tells us nothing, post actual specs/details if you want.
And no use comparing R2017 to R2014, a lot changed with graphics requirements between the two.

Are you referring to R14, (circa 1998) or 2014?

and what are you using to 'mask'  text -- wipeouts, background text masking for mtext? or ??

You really need to be posting in the C3D forum since that software is pretty much unique compared to all other AutoCAD variants https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/autocad-civil-3d-forum/bd-p/66

And post a sample DWG file over there with the problem.

How were you masking the text previously? I just masked text with the Expresstool "Textmask" and it shows objects as you move the text. But if you use the textmask option inside the MTEXT editor, it will hide the objects as you move the text.
