How to create a new layer?

I'm using AutoCAD LT and I'm trying to figure out how to create a new layer. The knowledge base article advises clicking on the new layer button in the layers palette, but there is no such button.

Thx, but when I type LAYER, there is no new layer button, only a list of layer commands none of which include the word NEW.

Do you have layer overrides turned on?

-LAYER (with a dash in the name) is what you can use if you want to type your way to creating a new layer and avoid the pop-up.

Hi @craig,

In the Ribbon at the top is a Layers panel. If you click on the icon labeled Layer Properties it will open the Layer Properties manager. From there you should be able to easily create a new layer.

Alternatively, you can type -Layer to have the command line version which includes New.

I made a short video that shows both options. If you are still stuck, please let me know what you are seeing on your side and I will try to help.

Thx John.vellek,

I guess my problem is even more basic, there are no tabs on my screen like you have on yours.

Try the AutoCAD for Mac forum for this.

HI @craig,

I apologize that I didn't catch that you were using AutoCAD for Mac. The bigger screen capture helped! I remade my video that shows how to do this on the Mac.

LA brings up the Layer Properties Manager. The NEW LAYER icon is at the bottom of this window. You can also rt-click over a layer name to bring up a menu that includes New Layer.

Thanks for your patience. I hope this helps more with your specific product question.

Hi Craig,

I am glad my video helped. Since you are apparently new to AutoCAD for Mac, I wanted to share this series of lessons on YouTube that you might find useful.

Have a good day!
