File Won't Open

Anonymous

Hi,

When I try to open a dwg file I get a message that says the file is already opened. (It isn't) I am asked if I want to open it as a read-only file. I do not want this. As a work around, I do this and then save it with a new name but this is unruly and inefficient... help?

I am working on a Mac with Autocad LT 2015

I have not found exactly this in other posts I can find...

Hi Megan,

Does this happens with specific drawing or with all drawings?
Where these drawings are stored? On the local drive or on network drive?

At first try to quit AutoCAD completely and restart your Mac.

If this will not help, go to the specific drawing in Finder and use "Get Info" window to verify that the drawing is not "Locked".
You need also to verify if you have write privileges for this file (at the bottom of the "Get Info" window).

Hi Maxim,

First, I really appreciate your replies - you have helped me before…

Your tip about looking at the “Get Info” was spot on. My file was locked and I did unlock it and was then able to open it without getting the message that it was "in use elsewhere" . My computer has been shutting itself off/crashing and then this seems to happen? Not entirely sure...

So, I used to store my files on my computer - I work by myself and it did not seem to be an issues I had plenty of storage. I however did change to cloud storage of my files so that might function like a “network” ? (that you are asking about?). I am generally familiar with networks from past office environments but I am not very certain about the cloud storage issues.

I’m not sure if there is something causing the files to lock, but now you have shown me how to unlock them.

VERY grateful!

Thank you!

Hi Megan,

Yes, file locking could be the result of System crash.
Cloud enabled folder on your Mac is not the same as network drive, it behaves differently, you should not worried about permissions in your case.
