Create new layers that are frozen in all existing layout viewports

Hi,

I am trying to create new layers that are frozen in all layout viewports and I have gone through the webpage help below from autodesk although it doesn't actually show how to do it?

I have tens of viewports on different layouts and if i create a new layer it shows on every existing viewport. It is incredibly time consuming to freeze that layer on every existing viewport. There doesn't seem to be a VP thaw function on Autocad LT mac so I can't thaw that layer on the few viewports i need it to show if i freeze it at the start.

Please help!

VPLAYER command is designed to do that: explore it in HELP.

I'm picking up on this old thread as I still can't find a solution to this problem. I want to be able to 'VP Freeze' a layer in all viewports except the current one, which can easily be done on Windows but the functionality appears to be missing on Mac.

The link quoted in the original question on this thread is to an article which says at the bottom " Create New Layers That Are Frozen in All Layout Viewports" (which is exactly what I want to do) but there is no explanation on how to actually do it. It then says "This is a shortcut..." but there is no link or shortcut to another article.

A bit more searching and I found another article (https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad-for-mac/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2021/E...) which says it is for AutoCAD Mac but then outlines the Windows process. I do not have the "VP Freeze" menu item when I right-click a layer in Mac. Just in case this is the issue, I am using AutoCAD LT on Mac but there isn't a forum available for that so I thought this was the best place to post the questions. It is functionality that is missing on AutoCAD LT on Mac but available on AutoCAD Mac and AutoCAD LT on Windows?

This is something that I need on an almost weekly basis for the work that I do and since working from home (on a mac) I am having to get someone else in the office to do this task to save time (some of our drawings can have 30+ layouts). Any Mac workaround would be very gratefully appreciated!

Hi Fergus,

While you are inside viewport, create new layer, right-click on it and select - Layer Status -> Freeze in New Viewports

Thanks for your reply, but I want to freeze in existing layout viewports, not just new ones. This is useful when I am first setting up the drawing but if I add a layer later and only want to see it in a single viewport then I need a quick way of freezing it in all others.

The article that I posted outlines how you can do this on Windows very easily by right-clicking the layer and selecting VP Freeze Layer > In All Viewports Except Current but this doesn't appear on Mac despite AutoCAD for Mac 2021 being listed under 'Products and versions covered'.

Yes, there is no such option on Mac. The AKN article you mentioned is incorrect.

Hi Lachlan!

I have all my layouts pretty much roughed in with viewports in paper space for all my sheets.

I want to create a new viewport on a new sheet and create two new LUO layers that will only display in the new viewport... ie I want the two new layers not to show up in any of the existing viewports... here is the method:

1) create the new sheet with the new viewport.

2) double-click inside the boundary of the new viewport

3) create the new layers and draw a temporary line on each of the new layers (in model space in the active viewport.)

4) enter the command 'vplayer'

5) select 'freeze' from the menu of options of the command

6) use the 'choose object on layer' option to click on the two temporary lines on the new layers.

7) select 'except current' from the options...

😎 double click outside the boundary of the new viewport you just created to get out of model space (clicked through viewport.)

9) check your other viewports by double clicking inside the viewport boundary to make sure the new layers 'vpfreeze' in your existing viewports!
