AutoCAD keeps saving multiple copies of the same file

I am using 2016 AutoCAD for Mac. This issue has just been occurring recently. When I save a DWG file as I always do, using "Save As", naming the file and then clicking on "Save" throughout the progression of drawing. Now instead of when I click on "Save" and it just would update the original file it now saves a new copy of the same file. So when I am done a project I will end up having 20+ copies of the same file. How do I stop this from happening?

Welcome to Autodesk Forums!

Where are your drawings? Are they in iCloud drive folder?

Does it happen if you save the file locally on the computer?

I'm not exactly sure. As far as I am aware I think that I am saving them to my local drive.

There is a defect (bug) in AutoCAD for Mac : when the drawings are in iCloud folder, each QSAVE command produces new copy of the drawing.

But if you save to Desktop everything should works properly. Than you need to try to reset AutoCAD.

I believe that resetting AutoCAD has fixed the problem. It doesn't seem to be making copies of my files anymore.

Thank you!

Hi @Anonymous

If resetting AutoCAD solves the problem, the issue is very likely caused by some of your personal settings. The settings before the resetting is backed up in file below and could you please find it and send me at: wei.ma@autodesk.com

1. In Finder window, click menu Go > hold the alt/opt key and see the Library menu shows, select the Library menu > In the window of Library folder, go to /Application Support/Autodesk/

2. Find the file naming like Settings Backup <time>.tgz, and send it to me.

Thanks,
Wei

I am having this problem as well - I dont want to reset auto cad because I just set it up how I like it!! -

This problem was happening right from the get go ... I installed auto cad 2017 onto my brand new Mac only a month or two ago and this multiple save problem was an issue right away.  I didn't transfer any of my personal settings over from my old Mac.

has anyone found a fix for this which does not involve re-setting ?

Hi there,

I am having the same issue.  How do I reset autocad after saving my file elsewhere to prevent from happening? If I reset will it delete all the settings I have made in the program?

Thank you 🙂

Welcome to the Autodesk Forums!

Hi Charlott,

Are you saving your drawings to iCloud enabled folder?

If yes, the you need to consider to save drawing to another place (not iCloud enabled) or turn off iCloud sync.

If you have problem with the folder which is not connected to iCloud, then you may try to reset AutoCAD (use menu AutoCAD ->Reset AutoCAD), but then you will loose all of your custom settings.

Is AutoDesk trying to find a solution for this at all? I am having the same issue with the 2017 LT version and now also with 2018. It's quite irritating cause I constantly have to figure out which version is the most recent as it's not always the original file that's most recent, nor the file with the highest number.

My whole computer is being backed up on iCloud and it's really a feature I don't wanna turn off after my last computer crashed on me and I lost all my files. iCloud just happens automatically in the background which is great, but it's causing this issue (the only issue I have with both iCloud and AutoCad services).

Set AutoCAD system variable isavebak=0 should stop this issue. Please try it.

Thanks,
Wei

At the command prompt type ISAVEBAK and hit return, then type 0 (zero) and hit return again:

Command: ISAVEBAK
Enter new value for ISAVEBAK <1>: 0
Command:

This will disable creation of BAK files each time you use QSAVE command.
