AutoCAD keeps saving multiple copies of the same file

I am using 2016 AutoCAD for Mac. This issue has just been occurring recently. When I save a DWG file as I always do, using "Save As", naming the file and then clicking on "Save" throughout the progression of drawing. Now instead of when I click on "Save" and it just would update the original file it now saves a new copy of the same file. So when I am done a project I will end up having 20+ copies of the same file. How do I stop this from happening?

Does that not increase the risk of losing work completely (i.e not being able to use drawing recovery properly) if Autocad crashes as the .bak files are not bing saved alongside the .dwg files??

Yes this will increase the risk of losing work: AutoCAD will not create BAK files alongside DWG, but autosave will work according to its settings.

But it means I should keep all of my project's files on my desktop which is not possible.

Autodesk should solve this bug. it is so annoying. as it was mentioned previously, I don't know which copy is the last version most of the time.

The workarounds offered of deleting back up files in Autocad or deleting backup to iCloud do not seem to be viable options as who wants to lose their ability to restore a drawing when Autocad shuts down on its own (which it did 3x just today)? I need to be able to recover my drawing files! Is there a workaround that does not include removing all safety nets?
