It would be nice if the Copy Project utility would automatically create a folder and .WDP file simultaneously, the same as when creating a new project. Most of us hardly use the New Project utility after we have created our first few projects. It makes much more sense to copy an existing project as a "seed" for a new design.
Creating a new project requires us to manually add such files as the .WDW file, .WDL file, .WDA file, WD_FAM.DAT file, etc., when shared defaults aren't used for these. It makes sense to store all such files in each project folder so we can just grab the entire project folder when we must travel, and we have what we need to support the project. It also makes sense for archiving. I even create a Project-specific Catalog Database in the project folder, for archiving purposes.
The Copy Project utility copies all such support files, which is nice. But the workflow for Copy Project is not as smooth as the workflow used to Create a New project. With Copy Project we are taken inside the folder where the .WDP file of the project we wish to copy is located, then we must move up one level, create a new folder, rename this new folder, open this new folder, and then name the .WDP file for the copied project. (see attached screen captures)
The workflow for copying a project should be streamlined to allow us to enter the name of the project to be copied, enter the name we want for the copied project, and have the folder and .wdp file created for us by AutoCAD Electrical.
Bonus: It is a common workflow to have a drawing open from the project you are copying. We have likely activated this project and viewed it to verify that it will make the best seed project for our new project. So we probably have a drawing open when we make the decision to copy the project. We must remember to close the drawing, or open a drawing from a different project (so the menus do not go away), or click the QNEW button and start a new blank drawing, just to prevent the inevitable error popup at the end of this very long process that warns us that we have a drawing open from the project we are trying to copy. So now we must exit the project copy process, close the open drawing, and start the Copy Project process all over again.
