Terminal strip jumpers

Terminal strip jumpers

Hello,

I'm starting to use terminal strips and I'm having troubles trying to represent jumped connections in a terminal strip.

For exemple on the attached files we can see AutoCad consider wires between TB04-1 and TB04-2 as another connection (terminal number is increased) when in real word we know that this wire is a jumper on the terminal strip.

In a real panel if we have  2 single level terminals with one wire per connection (total 4 wires) , we will bring the COM signal one time to the terminal strip, we put a jumper between the 2 terminal blocks  and we can use the other 3 connections to connect 3 more wires.

So how can I indicate to AutoCad that the wire between TB04-1 and TB04-2 is a jumper and should not be taken into account in terminal connections?

Thanks you.

You will need to create a special layer in your schematics for this and add them to your wire list.

WIRES-JUMPERXXXXXX

I have Wires-Jumper-Bar and Wires-Jumper-Internal.

When ACE finds a Layer with the word Jumper in it, it recognizes that signals can pass (like Wire numbers) but it will not be reported in Wire to-From lists.

I use "Wires-Jumper-Bar" for terminal strip jumper bars and "Wires-Jumper-Internal" for the connections inside multi-tier terminals. In the schematics, I make this layer magenta so they stand out.

Hi there,

I have a question on this topic.  The screen shot is how I show a jumper on a safety relay in the schematic.  The 'jumper' is a smart symbol so I can add all the mfg. / cat. / name / number of positions etc. info to have a good bill of material count for number of jumper for the panel build.  Can this smart block be worked into the 'jumper layer' feature?  I guess I am thinking along the line of a 'smart wire' that has all the component info as well as connecting wires and carrying wire numbers over termination points.

Thank you

I also use a wire type layer named JUMPERBAR to depict jumpers between terminals.  Since this is only a wire layer assignment it doesn't appear in the BOM.  To get it into the BOM I insert a footprint over my graphical terminal strip that looks like a jumper-bar (see attached screen capture).  I have a footprint for 2-point, 3-point, 4-point, 5-point and 10-point.  They are preloaded with the MFG and CAT attributes filled in, so I have to do is insert the footprint and they appear on the BOM.  I even added the footprints to my Panel menu.  See attached screen capture of the jumper-bars as they appear in the menu.  For more details about how to use a JUMPERBAR layer click this link:  http://www.ecadconsultant.com/tips.html#Terminal_Bus

Optionally, you can use the AEJUMPER utility (see attached screen capture) to pick terminals you wish to jumper together. This method allows you to assign a part number to the jumper so it appears in the BOM, however there will be no visible jumper shown between the schematic terminal symbols, so you might still want to add the JUMPERBAR wire layer between the terminals for drawing clarity.  Note that you can also assign these jumpers via the Terminal Strip Editor (TSE) and the TSE will trigger an update of the schematic terminal symbols to reflect the jumper assignments.  But again there is no visible jumper displayed.  It simply creates the logical connection to pass the wire number across and to get the jumper into the BOM, but if you create a Tabular Terminal Strip you will see a jumper chart that reflects which terminals are to be jumpered together.  I go into great detail regarding terminals as one of the topics in my advanced training course, but even my entry-level course covers jumpers between terminals to create a power bus, and how to get these jumpers into the BOM.

I think that if you open the block in BlockEditor or SymbolBuilder, you can just set the object to be on a JUMPER layer. However, it doesn't look like a line in your image, it looks like a polyline with width. If that's the case, it won't matter because ACADE won't see it as a wire anyway. (Only a LINE can be a wire...not polylines or arcs.)

The whole point to putting wires on a JUMPER layer is to prevent them from appearing in a report, such as wire from-to lists. Since your smart block isn't a line, it can't be a wire, and therefore won't appear in a report.

If by 'smart block' you mean 'dynamic block', it's not likely that you'll be able to get it to work with wire numbers, etc. owing to ACADE's general inability to use dynamic blocks.

IMO, the way you're already doing it is probably the best. You graphically show the jumper in a way that gives you catalog info for your BOM, all without screwing up the function of the schematic. Unless you need to generate clean from-to lists, or some other report, I think you're already good to go.

Hello Doug I've added jumpers using AEJUMPER, I can see them in TBE (see image) but I don't find a way to update the terminal strips data.

One side of terminals still shows the wires that that have been converted in jumpers.

Since I will connect one different signal on each side of the termimal bloc (in this case the COMMON terminal strip) should I assign the same terminal number to 2 differents symbols in schematics ?

There is another way to update it using the TBE ?

Thank you.

You shouldn't need to insert a second terminal by the same number.  But even if you use the AEJUMPER command to create the logical Jumper between terminals you must place the visible wire segments that represent the Jumper on a layer with the word jumper in the layer name, so that it will be ignored from the wire list.  You could also place the segments on layer 0.  It might help to see your actual drawing.

One last question ?

When jumpers are applied, the terminal strip left side still have wires but my right side is empty (see image). How can I do to change my connections to have 1 connection in each side in each level? Or all connections filled on both sides.

Thanks.

You can still connect two wires to the schematic terminal symbol, plus the jumper. For example attach a wire to the left side of a terminal and another to the right side. You could have a jumper connecting to the top from another terminal above and another jumper connected from the bottom to connect to a third terminal below. The TSE will show two wires connected to the middle terminal, the ones on the left and right. You can use the Mark Internal/External utility under the Edit Components panel or you can use the Toggle options in Terminal Strip Editor to set which wire is on which side of the terminal physically.

I want to export a report about jumper information

I made a footprint of the jumper as you instructed

If possible can you explain it to me? Thanks you
