Footprint and Symbol Will Not Replace with New

Anonymous
Not applicable
I make a footprint or symbol and I realize an attribute is visible that I want invisible after I have made the wblock. So I delete the old drawing and redo everything but when I insert the symbol or footprint the attribute is still visible. I've redone the symbol or footprint several times to make sure I did everything correct and it's still accessing the old footprint or symbol. The only way around this is for me to create the wblock and give the drawing a different name. The only thing I change is the name of the wblock and it works.

Why is it when I redo the symbol from scratch and delete the old drawing does it still access the old wblock?

You need to do a block update. The data for the old
block is still loaded into your drawing.

In fact, you don't need to delete the block at all.
Modify the block dwg and then update the block using the swap/update block
command (the second section of the first dialog is for the update).

This will remove the old block data and replace it
with the new data, and change the blocks that already have been
inserted.

Regards Brad

I used BEDIT and moved the TAG attribute to a new location and I want my drawing to use this new attribute location. It is my understanding that BEDIT changes the block for any new blocks inserted after the changes are made. Am I correct?

Would the Swap Block / Update Block work in replacing the block with my changes to the attribute location?

I tried this using the Update a Block - substitute new version for selected block in Option B. I select the block and then for Copy old block's attribute values to new swapped block I choose No, discard all old values but my TAG disappears.

I'm sure I'm not understanding how this all works.

I'm using ACE 2008 sp2

By selecting No for the Copy Old Block attributes,
you are basically telling ACADE that you want the blocks to have all information
removed when they are updated. Yes means the updated blocks have the same
information as the old block (TAG, CAT, MFG and so on). Your tag attribute is
still there, it just doesn't have any data in it to display.

If you need to move attributes permanently on the
block, edit the block dwg, however if its just on that dwg, you are better of
just selecting the block and moving the attribute manually after the first
insertion. If you do a copy symbol, the attributes will stay in the same
positions as where you have moved them to.

I try to keep away from BEDIT as I find it
extremely hard and confusing to use (especially the way Autodesk have set it up
in the 2009/2010 releases).

Thank you Brad. It is confusing because my TAG on each block was already filled so I don't understand why it would remove it. Anyway, I will revisit Swapping blocks and see if I can get it to work.

BEDIT works really well for me but I'm using 2008.
